EHS Drops Match, T-town Wins In Tennis

MATTOON -- Effingham High School dropped a 7-2 loss to Mattoon in tennis action Tuesday.

The Hearts picked up their two points in singles play. Riley Seachrist won at No. 4 over Caroline Davis. Davis won the opener 7-5 but Seachrist came back with 6-2, 10-8 scores for the win.

Eden Wendling took the second point at the No. 5 position. She also lost her opener to Kambelle Ashmore, 6-2 but came back to win 6-0, 12-10.

"The girls played some very competitive matches tonight," said EHS Coach Erik Williamson. "Our youth showed at some matches but so did our grit. Riley and Eden both came back from being down a set to win in a tiebreaker. Riley Arend and Seachrist fought hard in a very well played doubles match but fell deep in a tiebreaker, 13-11.

"We are looking forward to improving and competing at all levels throughout the season. We have the Edwardsville Invitational this weekend."

At Mattoon

No. 1 -- Emily Stortzum (M) defeated Caroline Kull (E), 6-1, 6-4

No. 2 -- Tess Huene (M) defeated Riley Arend (E), 6-1, 6-2

No. 3 -- Hallie Niemerg (M) defeated Lydia Kull (E), 6-0, 6-1

No. 4 -- Riley Seachrist (E) defeated Caroline Davis (M), 5-7, 6-2, 10-8

No. 5 -- Eden Wendling (E) defeated Kambelle Ashmore (M), 2-6, 6-0, 12-10

No. 6 -- Canyn Borntreger (M) defeated Chloe Aden (E), 6-2, 6-1

Doubles

No. 1 --Stortzum-Huene (M) defeated C. Kull-L. Kull (E), 6-0, 6-2

No. 2 -- Niemerg-Davis (M) defeated Arend-Seachrst (E), 7-5, 3-6, 13-11

No. 3 -- Ashmore-Destanee Garza (M) defeated Gracie Kroenlein-Aila Woomer (E), 6-2, 6-3

 

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis easily handled Flora for an 8-1 victory Tuesday.

The Wooden Shoes swept singles play. Diana Mossman was a 6-3, 6-3 winner while Alli Brumleve and Macy Probst took 6-1, 6-2 victories. Carley Habing won 6-2, 7-5 while Grace Hoene took her match 6-1, 6-4. Isabelle Hemmen won the final singles match, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles play, T-town's Brumleve and Probst were winners 6-0, 6-0. Mossman and Lexi Will claimed the third match, 6-1, 6-1.
