EHS Third At Apollo Tennis Meet, Players Named All-Apollo

LINCOLN -- Effingham High School finished third in the Apollo Conference Tennis Meet during the weekend.

Winning was Mattoon with 56 points followed by Mount Zion 48, Effingham 37, Charleston 29 and Lincoln 19.

During Friday action, doubles play took place. Ben Donsbach and Parker Siner won over a Lincoln duo, 6-0, 6-0. The pair then fell to Mattoon, 6-1, 6-3 and to Mount Zion, 7-5, 6-0. They finished fourth in the No. 1 doubles flight.

Nate Linders and Brennan Barr downed a Mattoon duo, 6-4,7-5 in semifinal play at No. 2 then fell to Mount Zion, 6-2, 6-2 to finish second at the No. 2 doubles flight.

Cole Stanfield and Colby Heaton won their opening match at No. 3 over Lincoln, 6-0, 6-0. The pair then fell to Mount Zion, 6-1, 6-1 before taking third by beating a Charleston duo, 6-3, 6-0.

In singles play Saturday, Siner finished second at No. 2 by defeating Peter Brandon (Mount Zion), 6-2, 6-2 before falling to Jacob Mathis (Mattoon), 6-3, 6-3.

Linder took third place at No. 3, losing to Coby Comstick (Mattoon), 6-4, 6-5, 6-2 in semifinal play before defeating Paul Witto (Charelston), 6-0, 6-3.

Hagler took second at No. 6 by beating Will Cope (Charleston), 6-1, 6-4 before droping the championship match against Alex Shumway (Mattoon), 6-1, 6-4.

Barr also took third, at No. 4 falling to Josiah Morton (Mattoon), 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4) then winning over Cameron Garrett (Charleston), 6-2, 6-0.

Stanfield was a third place finisher at No. 5, falling to Tejas Zala (Mattoon), 6-4, 6-1 before winning over Evan Cyrulik (Lincoln), 6-0, 6-0.

Donsbach took fourth at No. 1. He defeated Virat Patel (Lincoln), 6-1, 6-1 before falling to Joe Demirjian (Mount Zion), 6-0, 6-0. He then fell in the third place match to Keegan Gowin (Charleston), 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (3).

All-Conference awards were voted on by the coaches and Ben Donsbach and Parker Siner were voted to the All-Apollo Conference Team. Other recipients were Jacob Beavers and Francisco Velasco (Mount Zion), Reese Bergstrom, Coby Comstick and Jacob Mathias (Mattoon) and Keegan Gowin (Charleston).
