Bulldogs Beat Braves, Olney Wins Over EHS in Tennis

MOUNT ZION -- Effingham St. Anthony picked up the No. 1 singles win as Emilee Mossman won 7-6(3), 6-4. Mount Zion took the No. 1 doubles match 6-4, 7-5.

But the Bulldogs were in charge the rest of the way in taking a 9-3 victory in tennis action Thursday.

In singles play, Megan Hodge nabbed No. 4, 6-2, 6-0 while Madison McWhorter won at No. 5, 6-0, 6-1. Mary Claire Wegman blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

In doubles play, the Bulldogs' Wegman and Mossman went three sets at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-1, losing 6-4 then coming back with a 10-6 victory for the match. Makenzie Koenig and Reese Buenker took the final spot, also in three sets, losing the opener 6-3 but coming back strong to take 6-0, 10-1 wins.

"This was a great tennis complex," said St. Anthony Coach Darlene Esker. "Both teams enjoyed the competition."

At Mount Zion

No. 2 -- Mossman-Wegman (SA) defeated Santos-Rhoades (MZ), 6-1, 4-6, 10-6

No. 3 -- Maryann Saba-Reese Buenker (SA) defeated Emma Comerford-Caroline Edgecome (MZ), 3-6, 6-0, 10-1

Catherine Willenborg (SA) defeated Comerford (MZ), 6-0, 6-0; Averee Greene (SA) defeated Michelle Roberts (MZ), 6-1, 6-0

 

At Effingham

Olney came calling and picked up a 6-3 victory over Effingham Thursday.

The Hearts tallied two singles wins as Skyler Schafer won at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1 while Taylor Boyle took the No. 6 spot, 2-6, 6-1, 10-7.

EHS also nabbed the No. 1 doubles spot as Chloe Funneman and Lauryn Douthit won 6-3, 1-6, 10-7.
