EHS, T-town Take Tennis Wins

Effingham High School played host to Paris and sent the Tigers home with a 6-3 tennis defeat Thursday evening.

The Hearts picked up four of six singles matches as Chloe Funneman won a hard-fought 4-6, 6-1, 10-2 victory at No. 1. Lauryn Douthit took the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-3. Skyler Schafer won at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1 while Taylor Boyle finished out with a 6-2, 7-5 win oat No. 6.

In doubles play, the Hearts nabbed the top two victories. Funneman and Douthit combined to win at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1. No. 2 went to Kyra Bannister and Schafer 6-1, 6-2.

At Effingham

Singles

No. 1 -- Chloe Funneman (E) defeated Kaylee Landsaw (P), 4-6, 6-1, 10-2

No. 2 -- Lauryn Douthit (E) defeated Sydney Martin (P), 6-3, 6-3

No. 3 -- Taylor Evans (P) defeated Kyra Bannister (E), 7-5, 1-6, 10-8

No. 4 -- Skyler Schafer (E) defeated Gracie Rhoads (P), 6-0, 6-1

No. 5 -- Lexy Burtch (P) defeated Shania Cornell (E), 1-6, 6-4, 11-9

No. 6 -- Taylor Boyle (E) defeated Elizabeth Braun (P), 6-2, 7-5

No. 1 -- Funneman-Douthit (E) defeated Martin-Evans (P), 6-0, 6-1

No. 2 -- Douthit-Bannister (E) defeated Landsaw-Brown (P), 6-1, 6-2

No. 3 -- Rhoads-Barten (P) defeated Emily Kelly-Krystine Blackwell (E), 6-2, 6-0

 

 At Flora

Flora claimed a 7-2 victory over Effingham St. Anthony Thursday.

"We had good competition," said St. Anthony Coach Darlene Esker. "All were close matches. Four matches were tiebreaker, either for sets or matches."

Emilee Mossman won the No. 1 singles match for the Bulldogs, 6-2, 6-0. Flora then claimed the next five matches.

In doubles play, St. Anthony again won the top spot as Kelly Rentfrow and Claire Wortman won 6-4, 2-6, 10-8.

St. Anthony won a junior varsity match 7-2.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis pushed its record to 6-1 by edging Mount Zion 5-4 in action Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes fell in the top three singles matches but took the final three. Sidney Brumleve won at No. 4, 6-2, 6-0 while Julia Hardiek took the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-0. Alli Brumleve won at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles play, the Braves won at No. 1 but T-town took the next two matches for the victory. Christa Schwinke and Audra Breer combined to win at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1. Hardiek and Nicole Deters took the No. 3 position, 6-1, 6-1.
