T-town Wins Tennis Sectional, Shoes, Hearts, Bulldogs Players Advance To State

Teutopolis High School captured the championship of the Casey-Westfield Tennis Sectional Saturday by scoring 30 points. The Wooden Shoes were followed by Effingham 21, Casey-Westfield 14, Mattoon 12, Effingham St. Anthony 10, Shelbyville 9, Robinson 8, Paris 4, Newton 2 and Charleston 0.

Advancing in singles competition will be T-town's Andy Mersman and Kyele Mossman, Effingham's Aaron Conley and Shelbyville's Nathan Vasko. The top four finishers in singles and top four in doubles advance to the State Finals.

Doubles teams advancing to state were Trevor Lee and Jacob Mette (Teutopolis), Jay Niebrugge and Chris Jones (St. Anthony), Jared Minor and Drake Hill (Effingham) and Noah Pals and Alex Probst (Teutopolis).

T-town's Lee and Mette captured first place in doubles competition. The pair blanked a Robinson duo, 6-0, 6-0 before beating a pair from Casey-Westfield 6-0, 7-6 (4). Lee and Mette then beat the Effingham duo of Minor and Hill 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. In the title contest, they downed St. Anthony's Niebrugge and Jones, 7-6, 7-5.

Mersman was the singles champion. He blanked his first two opponents from Charleston and Casey-Westfield, 6-0, 6-0. Mersman then beat Nathan Vasco from Shelbyville 6-2, 6-0 and downed Effingham's Conley in the title contest 6-2, 7-6 (3).

The State Finals, hosted by Arlington Heights Hersey, will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The tourney opens Thursday with first, second and third championship rounds and first, second and third rounds of consolation feed-in. The fourth and quarterfinal championship rounds and the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh rounds of consolation feed-in will be played Friday.

Then in Saturday play, semifinal and final championship rounds and the quarterfinal, semifinal and final consolation feed-in rounds will be played.
