Bulldogs, Shoes Nab Tennis Wins

Effingham St. Anthony claimed a 5-2 victory over Mattoon in tennis competition Thursday, one of few sports events that was played due to the weather, although it was shortened when rain began.

The Bulldogs' Jay Niebrugge keeps adding opponents to his trophy case. This time, Niebrugge won over Jacob Woodyard 6-0, 6-0. Chris Jones also keeps racking up the wins as he beat his opponent 6-0, 6-4.

Chandler Martelli won at No. 5, 6-2, 6-0 while Kyle Hartke picked up his victory at No. 6, 6-4, 6-3.

Only one doubles event finished. Niebrugge and Jones won at the No. 1 spot, 10-4 before the rain and hail hit.

The Bulldogs are 5-1 on the season and will be back in action Tuesday hosting Casey-Westfield.

At St. Anthony

Singles

No. 1 -- Jay Niebrugge (SA) defeated Jacob Woodyard (M), 6-0, 6-0

No. 2 -- Chris Jones (SA) defeated Reese Bergstrom (M), 6-0, 6-4

NO. 3 -- Quinn Camfield (M) defeated Ian Harris (SA), 7-6, 5-7, 6-3

No. 4 -- Alexander Rhine (M) defeated Liam Hammer (SA), 7-6, 6-7, 7-5

No. 5 -- Chandler Martelli (SA) defeated  Lance Warfel (M), 6-2, 6-0

No. 6 -- Kyle Hartke (SA) defeated Caleb Borntrager (M), 6-4, 6-3

Doubles

No. 1 -- Niebrugge-Jones (SA) defeated Woodyard-Camfield (M), 10-4

 

 At Teutopolis

Teutopolis lost at the No. 1 singles spot but from that point on held Paris in check for an 8-1 victory Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes picked up singles wins from Jacob Mette (6-1, 6-1), Noah Pals (6-0, 6-2), Joseph Esker (6-0, 6-0), Alex Probst (6-1, 6-2) and Alex Meinhart (7-5, 6-1). Kyele Mossman lost at the No. 1 spot but put up a hard-fought battle going three sets. He won the opening set 6-1 before succumbing 6-2 in the second set. The third set went 10-8.

In doubles play, the Shoes swept. Trevor Lee and Mette won 6-0, 6-3 while Pals and Probst claimed the victory 6-1, 6-2. Andy Mersman and Meinhart had a very easy time, blanking their opponents, 6-0, 6-0.

The Shoes are now 7-0 on the season.
