Effingham High School's boys tennis team finished first in the Apollo Championship this past weekend.

EHS shared the win with Mount Zion, both coming in with 23 1/2 points. Mattoon took third with a close 23 points.

Effingham's No. 1 doubles, Jared Minor and Drake Hill, defeated Mattoon's Hennessy and Stoll in three sets 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 for first place metals.

Effingham 's No. 2 doubles team, Jake Gadberry and Ashton Haythrone. took fourth place.

Aaron Conley placed fourth in singles and Matt Nieburgge was tied for fifth, also in singles.

"Each player won his first match which was terrific and that led to the overall team victory," said EHS Coach Angela Woods. "Everyone played with purpose and earned points for the team. They should be very proud of their progress as I am. This championship is great preparation for sectionals next week."
