Wooden Shoes Down Bulldogs, Hearts Beat Tigers

TEUTOPOLIS -- Teutopolis High School kept its record unbeaten by downing Effingham St. Anthony 8-1 in tennis competition Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes took five of the six singles and swept the doubles competition. Mitch Meinhart was a winner 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 at No. 2, Trevor Lee won 6-0, 6-4 while Christian Deters took 6-1, 6-1 wins. Joseph Esker went 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and Alex Probst tallied a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

In doubles play, Andy Mersman and Nick Pals lost the opener 7-5 but came back 6-1, 6-3. Lee combined with Jacob Mette to win 6-1, 7-5. Meinhart and Noah Pals were winners at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0.

The Shoes are now 13-0 on the season while St. Anthony drops to 9-4.

At Teutopolis

No. 1 -- Jay Niebrugge (SA) defeated Andy Mersman (TT), 6-2, 3-6, 6-4

No. 2 -- Mitch Meinhart (TT) defeated Alec Niebrugge (SA), 6-7, 7-5, 7-6

No. 3 -- Trevor Lee (TT) defeated Chris Jones (SA), 6-0, 6-4

No. 4 -- Christian Deters (TT) defeated Ian Harris (SA), 6-1, 6-1

No. 5 -- Joseph Esker (TT) defeated Andy Saba (SA), 6-2, 6-1

No. 1 -- Mersman-Nick Pals (TT) defeated Jay Niebrugge-Jones (SA), 5-7, 6-1, 6-3

No. 2 -- Lee-Jacob Mette (TT) defeated A. Niebrugge-Harris (SA), 6-1, 7-5

No. 3 -- Meinhart-Noah Pals (TT) defeated Chandler Martelli-Donovan Hammer (SA), 6-1, 6-0

 

At Paris

Effingham's lone loss came in singles play but the Hearts put together an 8-1 win over Paris Thursday.

Jared MInor lost his opener at No. 1, 7-5 then won 6-0, 10-7. Aaron Conley claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2. Drake Hill blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0. Ashton Haythrone won 6-2, 6-2. Jake Gadberry won the opener 6-2, lost the second game 7-5 before pulling out the win 10-6.

In doubles, Minor-Hill were winners at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1. Conley and Matt Niebrugge took a 6-2, 6-0 win. Haythrone and Gadberry lost their opener 7-5 but came back 6-3, 12-10.

The Hearts are now 5-4 on the season.
