S.C., WSS, Altamont Win Softball Regionals; EHS Downs Mt. Vernon

South Central captured the championship of its own 1A softball regional.

Two area teams will go head-to-head in sectional action after both squads picked up softball regional championships during weekend action.

South Central had an easy time, downing Grayville 11-0 in four innings to win its own regional championship.

The game was suspended Friday in the fourth inning with one out and was supposed to resume Saturday. But Grayville decided not to return to complete the game. According to Illinois High School Association rules, the game is officially listed as a 7-0 forfeit.

However, the Cougars were in control Friday, scoring eight innings in the third and three more in the fourth behind an 11-hit attack.

Kaitlyn Swift led the offense with two singles, a double and two RBI. Abi Shuler and Kyra Swift had two singles each. Shuler added an RBI. Ella Watwood contributed a double and three RBI and Taegan Webster had a double and an RBI.

Webster threw a one-hitter with one walk while striking out nine.

South Central is now 24-9 on the season and will take on National Trail Conference opponent Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the South Central Sectional. In the other game Wednesday, Altamont will meet Casey-Westfield at 4 p.m.

The winners advance to the regional championship Friday at 4 p.m.

Class 1A Hutsonville Regional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg captured the championship of the Class 1A Hutsonville Regional Friday.

The Hatchets handed Cumberland a 7-4 loss. The two teams were tied at 1-1 after the second inning. Cumberland moved ahead 2-1 in the top of the third but WSS came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame and led 5-2 after four. The Pirates tallied two in the fifth but WSS put the contest away with single runs in the fifth and sixth.

Sam Hayes threw a six-hitter, allowing two walks while striking out eight on the mound.

The Hatchets had nine hits led by Ella Kinkelaar with a single, double and an RBI while Katelyn VonBehrends added two singles and an RBI. Ava Richards had a double and drove in a run.

Cumberland was led by Isabel Martinez with two singles and an RBI and Nora Cross and Chaney Thornton with a single and an RBI each.

Windsor/;Stew-Stras advances to the Class 1A South Central Sectional Tuesday and will meet the host squad at 4 p.m. In the other contest that is scheduled for Wednesday, Altamont takes on Casey-Westfield at 4 p.m.

The winners then advance to the sectional championship Friday at 4 p.m. That winner will advance to the Johnston City Super-Sectional.

Class 1A Altamont Regional

Altamont won the championship of its own regional Saturday.

The Indians broke a 1-1 second inning tie with a run in the fourth and went on to down Edwards County (Albion), 4-1.

Grace Lemke threw a one-hitter as she struck out 15 in the contest. Lemke allowed six walks.

Meanwhile, the Indians had four hits led by Skylie Klein with a single and two RBI and Lemke with a single and an RBI. Adria Denton added an RBI while Lanie Tedrick and Madison Tonn had a single each.

Altamont advances to the South Central Sectional Wednesday where the Indians will face Casey-Westfield at 4 p.m. The first game of the sectional is scheduled for Tuseday as South Central and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg meet at 4 p.m.

The winners of those two contests will meet for the sectional championship Friday at 4 p.m.

At Mount Vernon

Effingham finished up regular season play with a 12-3 victory over Mount Vernon.

The Hearts banged out 12 hits in the contest. Riley Cunningham was on offensively with two doubles and three RBI while Sidney Donaldson had a single, double and an RBI and Kristen Armstrong a single and double. Mya Harvey added two singles and two RBI and Raegan Boone and Saige Althoff a single and two RBI each.

Natalie Armstrong was the winner on the mound, going four innings, allowing one hit, no walks and striking out five.

The Hearts finished the Apollo Conference season this year with a 9-3 record and stands at 19-11 overall going into regional action Wednesday at Centralia.

EHS, seeded third, will take on No. 6 Mattoon at 4:30 p.m. The opening game today features No. 8 Centralia at No. 7 Olney at 4:30. Tuesday's contest will have No. 2 Charleston against the winner of the first game at 4:30. The championship is scheduled for Friday at 4:30 p.m.
