Finals Set For NTC Tournament, EHS Claims Softball DH

The finals are set for the National Trail Conference Softball Tournament after competition Wednesday at Evergreen Hollow Park.

Effingham St. Anthony and South Central will square off for the title after picking up victories.

The Bulldogs easily handled Altamont in a 23-3 contest that went four innings.

St. Anthony finished with a whopping 18 hits in the game. Abbie Hatton led the way with a triple, home run and four RBI while Anna Faber had a single, triple and four RBI. Ady Rios added a triple and an RBI while Camille Wines, Laney Coffin and Cameran Rios had two singles each. Wines and Rios added an RBI each. Lucy Fearday and Hailey Niebrugge had a single and two RBI each and Ava Walton and Ava Faber had a single and an RBI each. Addie Wernsing added two RBI.

Sydney Kibler took over the pitching in the second inning and went three innings, allowing three runs on two hits, no walks and striking out six.

Altamont had two hits, both by Adria Denton with a single, double and driving in the only two runs the Indians scored.

South Central, seeded third, pulled off an upset of No. 2 seeded Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg by a 7-5 count.

The Hachets ran out to a 3-1 opening inning lead and pushed that to 4-1 in the second. However, the Cougars came back with a four-run fifth to lead 5-4 until the bottom of the frame when Windsor/Stew-Stras tied at 5-5. The Cougars then won the contest with a two-run seventh.

Brooklyn Garrett finished with two singles, a home run and three RBI to lead South Central. Jaylyn Michel added a triple while Kinlee Thompson had a double.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Ella Kinkelaar with two singles, a triple and an RBI. 

Taegan Webster picked up the pitching win, going all seven innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

Sam Hayes suffered the loss, going all seven innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits, three walks and six strikeouts.

In a consolation bracket, contest, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City blanked St. Elmo/Brownstown, 12-0.

CHBC edged ahead with two runs in the second, then had a seven-run third and a three-run fourth.

The Bobcats had 10 hits led by Ruby Stuckemeyer with a single, double and an RBI, Addison Wasson with a double and Macee Rodman with a triple and an RBI. Ryleigh Sarver adeed a single and drove in two runs while Marissa Summers, Koda Colman and Averie Vaughn had a single and an RBI each.

Summers was the winning pitcher going four innings allowing three hits, no walks and three strikeouts.

St. Elmo/Brownstown had singles from K. Speagle, M. Sapp and L. Wright.

The finals are scheduled for today as St. Anthony meets South Central at 6 p.m. for the championship in a game that can be heard on 979XFM. The third place contest will take place at 4:15 p.m. featuring Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg against Altamont. In the consolation championship, Dieterich faces CHBC at 4:15 p.m.

At Taylorville

Effingham High School captured an Apollo Conference doubleheader over Taylorville Wednesday.

The Hearts opened with an 11-0 win in five innings. The Hearts had 11 hits in the contest while Natalie Armstrong was holding the Tornadoes to two hits.

Riley Cunningham had a single, triple and an RBI while Jerzi Bierman, Sidney Donaldson and Abby Cunningham had a single, double and an RBI each. N. Armstrong aided her own cause with two singles and an RBI and Mya Harvey had a  single and an RBI.

N. Armstrong gave up four walks and struck out three.

In the second contest, the Hearts continued with the hot bats by tallying 17 hits.

The Hearts edged out to a 2-0 first inning lead then had a seven-run third and ended the game in the fifth.

Donaldson had two singles, a triple and two RBI while A. Cunningham added a single, double and two RBI. Jennifer Jamison had a triple. Bierman and Kristen Armstrong had two singles and two RBI each. Raegan Boone and Myra Harvey added two singles and an RBI each and Madi Kirk two singles.

R. Cunningham was the winning pitcher allowing two runs on four hits, three walks and one strikeout.
