Altamont, WSS, S. Central Win NTC Tourney Openers; Softball Roundup

Altamont, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and South Central were opening round winners in the National Trail Conference Softball Tournament Monday at Evergreen Hollow Park.

Altamont tallied a 3-2 victory over Dieterich in the first contest. The Indians scored a run in the second and one in the fifth but Dieterich came back in the bottom of the fifth to knot the score at 2-2. Altamont then produced the winning run in the sixth and held off the Maroons in the final inning.

Altamont had eight hits led by Grace Lemke with two singles and an RBI and Madison Tonn and Brianna Grunloh with a single and an RBI each.

Lemke was the winning pitcher, going all seven innings, allowing two runs on two hits, five walks and striking out 11.

Dieterich was led by Brittney Niemerg with a single and two RBI. Ella Kreke had the other hit, a single.

Altamont, seeded fifth, advances to meet top-seeded Effingham St. Anthony Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.

In the second contest, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, seeded No. 2, won over seventh-seeded St. Elmo/Brownstown, 15-0 in four innings.

The Hatchets ran out to a 13-0 opening inning lead and tacked on two more runs in the fourth.

Sam Hayes and Ava Richards combined to toss a no-hitter. Hayes went the first two innings without allowing a walk and striking out one. Richards threw the final two innings, not allowing a walk and also striking out one.

Meanwhile, the Hatchets had 15 hits and were aided by seven SEB errors.

Hayes had two singles, a double, triple and five RBI while Richards had a double and an RBI. Kaylyn Carey and Alaira Friese had two singles and an RBI each. Ella Kinkelaar and Leah Kasey added two singles each. Sam Porter had a single and drove in two runs.

In the final game, South Central handed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City a 17-0 loss in four innings.

The No 3 seeded Cougars ran out to an 8-0 first inning lead then added on nine in the second.

South Central had 11 hits led by Jaylyn Michel with a single, double, triple and four RBI. Kinlee Thompson added three doubles and three RBI. Amelia Montes had a double and two RBI.

Taegan Webster threw a two-hitter with two walks and five strikeouts.

CHBC had singles from Ruby Stuckemeyer and Addison Wasson.

The tournament continues Wednesday with St. Anthony meeting Altamont at 4:15 p.m. and Windsor/Stew-Stras taking on South Central, also at 4:15 p.m. In the consolation bracket, St. Elmo/Brownstown faces Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 6.

The finals of the touranment have been moved to Thursday due to rain in the forecast for Friday.

At Mount Zion

Effingham St. Anthony traveled to Mount Zion and came home with a 9-5 win over the Braves Monday.

The Bulldogs had their hitting shoes on as they banged out 14 in the contest. Five players had two hits each. Sydney Kibler had a single, double and three RBI, Cameran Rios a single, triple and an RBI, Lucy Fearday two singles and two RBI and Ady Rios and Abbie Hatton two singles and an RBI each. Hailey Niebrugge added a double and Addie Wernsing had a single and an RBI.

Fearday picked up the pitching victory, allowing five runs on eight hits, one walk and striking out three.

The Bulldogs trailed 3-1 after two innings then tallied four in the third and three in the fourth.

Teutopolis blanked Shelbyville 10-0 in a game played at Eastern Illinois University's Wililams Field Monday.

The Wooden Shoes tallied five runs in the second and added two in the fourth and fifth and finished with one in the seventh.

T-town's Courtney Gibson threw a two-hitter with three walks and four strikeouts.

The Shoes had 12 hits led by Summer Wall with four singles, a double and an RBI, Erin Althoff with a single, double and two RBI, Olivia Copple with two singles and an RBI and Danielle Sarchet with a double.

Midland Trail Conference Tournament

Clay City/North Clay fell in opening round play at the Midland Trail Conference Tournament Monday by a 3-0 count.

Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran tallied a single run in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Despite striking out 11, Morgan Hance picked up the loss on the mound. She allowed two hits and walked six.

Hance, Gracie Marshoff and Hannah Kramer-McKinney had a single each. CC/NC drops to 5-7 on the season.
