EHS, S. Central Win Two; T-town Claims Three Wins, Softball Roundup

Effingham High School downed Lincoln in an Apollo Conference softball doubleheader Saturday.

The Hearts won the opener 8-2. Lincoln took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Hearts tallied three in the fourth and fifth and two in the seventh.

EHS had nine hits led by Riley Cunningham with two singles, a home run and two RBI and Sidney Donaldson with two singles, a home run and one RBI. Mya Harvey added a double. Kristen Armstrong finished with two RBI.

Natalie Armstrong picked up the win on the mound, going all seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits, one walk and striking out five.

In the second game, Effingham ended this game in the fifth, 16-1.

The Hearts banged out 15 hits in the contest led by Harvey with a single, double, home run and three RBI, Raegan Boone with a single, double, triple and an RBI, N. Armstrong with a single, home run and two RBI, Jerzi Bierman and K. Armstrong had a double and two RBI each, Donaldson added a single, doouble and an RBI and Cunningham a double and an RBI.

N. Armstrong went four innings allowing one run on four hits, one walk and striking out two for the win.

At Newton

Newton played host to Teutopolis, Freeburg and Champaign Central as the three squads played each other Friday.

Newton fell to Freeburg, 9-2. The two teams tallied a run in the first before Freeburg moved ahead with two in the third and four in the fourth.

Newton had six hits led by Bailee Frichtl with three singles and an RBI.

In the second contest, the Eagles defeated Champaign Central, 7-3.

Newton banged out 13 hits led by Addy O'Dell and Frichtl with a single, double and an RBI each, Avery Mulvey with three singles and two RBI, Kaylee Kocher with two singles and an RBI, Camryn Martin with a double and an RBI and Macy Barthelemy with a double.

Teutopolis faced Champaign Central and won 4-3. The Wooden Shoes tallied two runs in the first and two in the second.

The Wooden Shoes had eight hits led by a solo homer off the bat of Olivia Copple, two doubles and an RBI by Erin Althoff and Summer Wall with a double and an RBI. Kaylee Niebrugge added a single and an RBI.

Jordan Goeckner was the winner on the mound, going six innings allowing three runs on seven hits, four walks and striking out one.

In the second contest, Freeburg downed the Shoes, 6-2.

Freeburg edged out to a 1-0 lead in the second then tallied three runs in the third and two in the fifth.

The Shoes had eight hits led by Estella Mette with a double, Emily Konkel with two singles and two RBI and Althoff with two singles.

In games Saturday at Olney, T-town edged Pana, 7-6.

The Shoes had 12 hits led by Althoff with three singles and an RBI, Niebrugge with a single and triple, Wall with a single, double and an RBI and Malea Helmink and Danielle Sarchet with a double each. Helmink had an RBI.

Gibson came on in relief of Jordan Goeckner in the fourth and went four innings for the victory on the mound, allowing one run on four hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

T-town then trounced Richland County, 17-1 in four innings.

The Shoes had a five-run first and tallied four runs each over the next three innings.

T-town again was a hitting machine with 19 in the contest. Sarchet had four singles and drove in three runs while Copple had three singles. Konkel had a single, triple and two RBI while Niebrugge had a single, double and four RBI and Helmink a single, double and two RBI. Althoff had two singles and three RBI, Gibson a double and an RBI and Wall two singles.

Gibson won on the mound, going two innings, allowing one run on three hits, no walks and striking out two.

 At Kinmundy

South Central handed Edwards County (Albion) a doubleheader loss Saturday.

The Cougars won the opener 9-3 behind a 10-hit contest. South Central moved ahead 5-0 in the second and led 8-3 after four. The Cougars tallied one more in the fifth.

Jaylyn Michel had two singles, a double and an RBI while Kinlee Thompson led the way with two doubles, a home run and four RBI.

Taegan Webster picked up the win, allowing four hits, four walks and striking out three.

In the second game, South Central edged out to a 1-0 lead and Edwards County tied in the top of the second. South Central then had a three-run second and went on for a 12-8 victory.

Both teams had 11 hits. Brooklyn Garrett led the Cougars with two singles, a double and two RBI. Michel had a double and an RBI and Webster two singles.

South Central improved to 16-5 on the season and is back in action today at Odin.
