Newton Edges St. A, Altamont, S. Central Win In Softball; EHS Outlasts St. A In JV Game

Newton broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run fifth and captured a 3-1 high school softball win over Effingham St. Anthony Tuesday.

The Eagles tallied a run in the second and the Bulldogs tied in the bottom of the fourth. But the Eagles scored two more in the fifth for the victory.

Newton had four hits in the contest led by Kayla Kocher with a home run and two RBI. Bailee Frichtl had two singles and Lexie Grove added a single and an RBI.

Kocher went two innings, allowing one run, one walk and striking out one before Avery Mulvey came on in the third to go the rest of the way. Mulvey allowed one run on four hits and two strikeouts for the pitching victory.

St. Anthony had five hits led by Haliey Niebrugge with a solo home run. Cameran Rios, Addie Wernsing, Lucy Fearday and Abbie Hatton had a single each.

At Effingham

At Ramsey

Altamont stepped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and went on to down Ramsey by a 9-5 count Tuesday.

Grace Lemke threw a no-hitter through six innings, allowing three walks while keeping Ramsey under wraps with a whopping 17 strikeouts.

Ramsey pulled within 6-5 in the fifth but the Indians tallied three more in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.

The Indians finished with 14 hits in the contest. Lanie Tedrick had three singles and an RBI. Adria Denton had a single, double and an RBI while Brianna Grunloh and Peyton Osteen had a double each. Skylie Klein had two singles and drove in two runs while Lemke and Claire Boehm also had two singles and finished with one RBI each.

Altamont improved to 4-7 on the season.

At Kinmundy

South Central blanked St. Elmo/Brownstown by a 12-0 count in five innings Tuesday.

Ella Watwood threw a one-hitter with two walks and five strikeouts.

Meanwhile, the Cougars had 13 hits in the contest. Taegan Webster had a double, home run and two RBI, while Jaylyn Michel, Brooklyn Garrett, Kinlee Thompson and Abi Shuler had a double each. Shuler had two RBI while Garrett had one RBI. Percilla Reid had two singles and an RBI.

South Central improved to 3-2 in the National Trail Conference and 10-3 overall and returns to action today at Flora.

Junior Varsity Game

Effingham won a wild-scoring game over Effingham St. Anthony in junior varsity softball action Tuesday.

The Hearts outlasted the Bulldogs by a 24-23 count in eight innings.

EHS scored four in the bottom of the eighth to walk it off.
