Bulldogs Win Big, Hearts Fall To Mount Zion, Softball Roundup

ARCOLA -- Effingham St. Anthony banged out 15 hits and had big-run innings in downing Arcola 19-3 in softball competition Tuesday.

The Bulldogs edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead and then tallied nine in the second, three in the third and ended the game with six in the fifth.

St. Anthony's Lucy Fearday was the big hitter on the day with two singles, a home run and four RBI. Ava Walton slammed out a home run and had three RBI. Anna Faber had a single, double and three RBI while Sydney Kibler and Laney Coffin had a double each and Kallie Kabbes had a triple and an RBI. Addie Wernsing had two singles and an RBI and Cameran Rios added two singles. Hailey Niebrugge finished with a single and two RBI.

Wernsing was the winning pitcher, going 3.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits, three walks and striking out six.

At Effingham

Mount Zion tallied two Apollo Conference victories over Effingham in a doubleheader that was a remake from Saturday's rained out contests.

In the opener, the Braves edged Effingham, 5-4. Mount Zion scored early, taking a 2-1 first inning lead then tacked on two more in the fourth. The Hearts pulled within 4-2 in the third but Mount Zion scored one in the fourth for a 5-2 lead.

EHS mounted comebacks in the fifth and sixth, scoring a single run each in the two innings only to fall short.

Effingham outhit Mount Zion, 12-11. Jennifer Jamison, had a single, home run and two RBI while Riley Cunningham had a double and an RBI, Raegan Boone two singles and an RBI and Kristen Armstrong two singles.

In the second game, Mount Zion downed the Hearts, 8-4.

Both teams had 12 hits but the Hearts committed four errors.

Mount Zion took a 2-0 first inning lead and led 4-1 after two innings and 5-3 after three. The Braves added on a single run in the fifth and two in the seventh.

The Hearts were led by Sidney Donaldson with two singles and a double, Armstrong with a double and an RBI, Boone with three singles and an RBI and Jamison with a single and two RBI.

At Strasburg

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg ran out to a 7-0 lead on Okaw Valley and went on to end the game in the fifth inning by the 10-run rule, 15-2 Tuesday.

Three pitchers held Okaw Valley to one hit. Sam Hayes went four innings for the win, allowing no runs on no hits, one walk and striking out eight. Ellie Wittenberg allowed two runs on one hit. Claire Holland went one inning, allowing one walk and striking out one.

Ava Richards led with a single, triple and two RBI while Ella Kinkelaar had a single, double and three RBI. Alaira Friese added a single, double and two RBI while Kaylyn Carey had a single, double and one RBI. Hayes aided her own cause with a double and three RBI. Wittenberg added a single and two RBI.

At Strasburg

South Central blanked Altamont by a 5-0 count Tuesday.

Both teams had three hits while Altamont finished with four errors.

Taegan Webster picked up the pitching win, going all seven innings, allowing three hits, one walk while striking out 11.

Webster, Amelia Montes and Jaylyn Michel added a single each. Michel and Webster had an RBI each.

South Central is now 1-2 in the National Trail Conference, 4-2 overall.

Altamont was led by Sophia Pearcy with a double. The Indians dropped to 0-1 in the NTC, 2-5 overall.

At Newton

Newton held off a last inning challenge by Charleston to take a 4-3 victory Tuesday.

The Eagles edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead then added on two in the third. Charleston tallied two in the top of the sixth but Newton scored a run in the bottom of the frame then held the Trojans to one run in the seventh for the victory.

Newton had four hits led by Addy O'Dell with two singles, Kayla Kocher with two RBI and Bailee Frichtl and Avery Mulvey with a single and an RBI each.

Kocher went 5.2 innings allowing two runs on five hits, two walks and one strikeout.

Teutopolis took a 2-0 first inning lead then tallied five in the second to lead 7-0.

Unfortunately for the Wooden Shoes, Greenville came roaring back in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs for an 8-7 victory.

The Wooden Shoes outhit Greenville 11-10. Erin Althoff had a single, double and two RBI while Courtney Gibson had a double. Emily Konkel and Kaylee Niebrugge had a single and drove in two runs each.

Jordan Goeckner started on the mound, going 4.1 innings allowing seven runs on four hits, four walks and striking out five. Alyssa Tipton came on to finish 2.2 innings allowing one run on six hits and striking out three but picked up the loss.

Dieterich took a 2-1 lead in the third inning but the contest went all the way with the Movin' Maroons winning in the bottom of the seventh, 6-5 over Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville Tuesday.

O/P/H led 1-0 in the top of the third but Dieterich took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame and led 4-1 after four innings and 5-1 after five. Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville came back with three runs in the sixth and tied the score at 5-5 in the top of the seventh.

Dieterich had eight hits led by Lucie Jansen with two singles and an RBI, Ella Kreke with two singles, Ruby Westendorf with a double and an RBI and Brittney Niemerg a double. Addi Huber added a single and an RBI.

Callie Faller ended up the winner on the mound, going the final inning allowing no runs on no hits.

Richland County came calling and picked up a 14-2 win over Clay City/North Clay Tuesday.

The Tigers took a 6-0 opening inning lead then added on two in the second, four in the third and finished with two in the fifth.

Clay City/North Clay had five hits led by Hannah Kramer-McKinney with a single and double and Ellie Hagen with a single and an RBI.

Clay City/North Clay is now 4-2 on the season and 5-1 in the Midland Trail Conference.
