No one wants to see a high school athletic contest decided by anything other than athletes involved.  However, the heavy rains that dumped water by the buckets onto the Eastside Centre in East Peoria Saturday caused the 1A softball state championship game to be called after six innings, giving Milledgeville the title 5-4.

Due to the rains on Friday, the 12:30pm scheduled start for the championship was pushed back to 1pm.  The game gradually progressed until mid-afternoon when the heavens opened.  The rains continued for most of the afternoon and really opened up around 5pm.  At that point, IHSA officials said the game would resume at 8:15pm but the contest could not be completed and Milledgeville was declared the winner.

Cumberland says goodbye to seniors Stephanie Flier, Jasie McMechan, Brittani Oakley, Paige Oakley, Micah Seibert, Olivia Titus and Hannah Wilson.

Goreville defeated Illini Bluffs 13-6 to take third place honors in 1A.

The rains also led the IHSA to postpone the 2A state finals until Sunday, with the third place game between Peru St. Bede and Nashville set for 11am and the championship game between Tremont and Kankakee McNamara to follow.
