Bulldogs Win City Series 2-1

The St. Anthony Bulldogs earned bragging rights for 2013 by winning the deciding game of the three-game set Friday, downing the Effingham Hearts 11-3 in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.

St. Anthony scored twice in the first inning when Hunter Niebrugge singled home Morgan Gardewine and Makayla Walsh who had each singled ahead of her.  The Bulldogs added a run in the second when Walsh delivered a run-scoring single to bring home Megan Nuxoll who had doubled.

Effingham scored in the third inning when Kaylee Tonn doubled home Kelli Utz who had walked.

St. Anthony bounced right back, though, scoring six runs in the bottom of the frame.  Kristin Schuette singled, Kate Richards reached on an error, Meghan Woltman singled, D.J. Brummer reached on an error and Megan Nuxoll was safe on a fielder's choice.  Paige Koester singled home a run, Walsh drove home two more runs with a base hit, Hunter Niebrugge reached on the Hearts' third error of the inning and Schuette singled to bring home the final run of the big inning.

Effingham tried to battle back, scoring twice in the fifth inning.  With two out, Kelli Utz walked and Shelby Nunamaker reached on an error before Tonn delivered another double, driving in both runners.

St. Anthony scored again in the fifth, though, when Walsh capped a four-for-four day at the plate with a home run over the right field fence.  The Bulldogs scored their final run in the sixth with two outs when Woltman singled, D.J. Brummer doubled and Nuxoll singled Woltman home.

Woltman went the distance for the win, allowing one earned run on five hits and four walks.  Tonn took the loss for Effingham, also pitching a complete game, allowing just four earned runs, giving up 15 hits but no walks while fanning four batters.

For St. Anthony, Paige Koester singled and scored, Morgan Gardewine singled and scored, Makayla Walsh homered and singled three times, scored three times and drove in four runs, Hunter Niebrugge singled and drove in two runs, Kristin Schuette singled three times, scored twice and drove in a run, Kate Richards scored a run, Meghan Woltman singled twice and scored two runs, D.J. Brummer doubled, and Megan Nuxoll doubled and singled, scored twice and drove in a run.

For Effingham, Kelli Utz walked twice and scored two runs, Shelby Nunamaker singled and scored a run, Kaylee Tonn doubled twice and drove in three runs, Britanny Beals walked and Brandy Pontious singled.
