St. A Bounces Back To Tie Softball City Series at 1-1

The St. Anthony Bulldogs bounced back Thursday to tie the 2022 Softball City Series at 1-1. 

The Bulldogs beat the Effingham Hearts 11-7 following Effingham's 15-8 win on Wednesday. Ironically, each team has won on the opponent's home field. Both games were heard on KJ County 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

That means Friday afternoon's contest will be the rubber game of the three-game series. Game time at Bulldog Field will be 4pm and the contest will be again be broadcast on KJ Country.

The Hearts opened with a 1-0 first innings lead. as Grace Bushur doubled to start the frame. Daelyn Dunston followed with a bunt single. An error filled the bases on a ball hit by Abby Cunningham. A fielder's choice brought the run home.

St. Anthony came right back to tie the score in the second . With two outs, the Bulldogs had three straight singles by Sidney Kibler, Anna Faber and Abbie Hatton. Faber scored for the 1-1 tie.

But the Hearts moved ahead in the fourth as Jennifer Jamison was hit by a pitch, took second on a wild pitch and came home on a ground out by Saige Althoff.

The Bulldogs then decided to put this one in the win column in the fourth. The inning started with a walk issued to Faber. Hatton followed with a single. Both runners moved over on a bunt out by Grace Karolewicz. Cameron Rios earned an RBI as did Addie Wernsing on a double. Hayley Niebrugge singled followed by a walk to Lucy Fearday. Madeline Kibler then slammed out a home run ro clear the bases and Sidney Kibler followed with a home run and the Bulldogs led 9-2 lead.

The Hearts came back with four in the sixth as Tori Budde drew a walk and Saige Althoff had an infield single. With two outs, a double by Grace Bushur scored both runners and a single by Dunston put two runners on base. Cunningham knocked in a run on a single and the Hearts had pulled within 9-5.

The Bulldogs tallied two more runs in the sixth on a double by M. Kibler and a single by S. Kibler.

Lucy Fearday was the winner on the mound, going all seven innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits, one walk and striking out four.

The Bulldogs were led by Wernsing with a single, two doubles and an RBI, M. Kibler with a double, home run and four RBI, S. Kibler with two singles, a home run and two RBI and Rios with two singles and two RBI.

Effingham was led offensively by Bushur with two doubles and two RBI, Sai. Althoff with a single, triple and an RBI and Mya Harvey with two singles and an RBI.
