St. Anthony Wins Newton Tournament

Effingham St. Anthony High School claimed the championship of the Newton Softball Tournament Saturday.

The Bulldogs defeated Tolono Unity 6-3 and won over Newton 7-1. They fell to Arcola 11-7. Newton also finished with a 2-1 record, defeating Arcola 9-3 and Tolono Unity 14-2. Tolono Unity edged Arcola 2-1. Arcola and Tolono Unity finished 1-2.

In the win over Tolono Unity, the Bulldogs had five hits led by Makayla Walsh with a home run and two RBI, Kate Richards with a triple and two RBI and Hunter Niebrugge with a double.

In the loss to Arcola, St. Anthony outhit the Purple Riders 10-9 but committed six errors. Walsh had a single, double, triple and two RBI while Niebrugge had a single, double and an RBI. Paige Koester had two singles.

In the win over Newton, St. Anthony took a 4-1 lead after two innings then had a three-run fourth. The Bulldogs' Meghan Woltman pitched a one-hitter with three walks and two strikeouts.

Walsh had two singles and drove in two runs while Richards had two singles and an RBI.
