Effingham St. Anthony High School edged Mattoon, 2-1 in the season opener for softball Tuesday and in Coach Makayla Walsh's debut as head coach of the Bulldogs. Walsh was named coach back in October of 2019 but last year's spring season was called off due to Covid.

The Bulldogs tallied two in the second inning as Sydney Kibler hit a solo home run and Addie Wernsing doubled home a run.

Lucy Fearday went the distance on the mound, allowing one run on three hits, no walks while striking out four.

Mattoon scored its lone run in the sixth.

"It was a well played game by both teams," said Coach Walsh. "The defense and pitchers from both teams performed very well. Lucy Fearday did an excellent job on the mound for us and Sydney Kibler had her first high school home run in her first at bat. I'm looking forward to a terrific year."
