Indoor Softball Tourney to Benefit Special Olympics Illinois

DU QUOIN, Ill. – Twenty-four traveling softball teams will compete at the 11th Annual Girls Winter Indoor Softball Tournament January 17-19. The tournament takes place at the Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin. All proceeds will benefit Special Olympics Illinois Southern/Region K.

The combination of the softball and baseball tournaments have raised over $550,000 in the past years 10 for Special Olympics Illinois. Girls softball teams from across Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, and Kentucky will compete in the following age groups: 12 & under, 14 & under, and 16 & under. The competition will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday, January 17 and continue through Sunday, January 20. Each team will play a minimum of three games in this double-elimination tournament. 

All proceeds provide support to over 1,600 athletes competing with Special Olympics Illinois Southern Region K, which serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the following counties: Alexander, Clay, Edwards, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Lawrence, Marion, Massac, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Randolph, Richland, Saline, Union, Wabash, Wayne, White and Williamson counties.

An opening ceremony for the tournament will begin at noon Saturday, January 18, at the S.I. Center, where competing teams, tournament sponsors, community leaders, special guests, and Honorary Special Olympics Illinois Athletes will be introduced and honored. Also featured during the opening ceremony is a Unified Softball exhibition game. Fans are encouraged to come out and cheer for all teams throughout the weekend.
