Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and Jasper County captured junior high regional softball championships Monday.

Class 1A Altamont Regional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg edged Effingham St. Anthony, 7-6 to claim this regional crown.

The two teams were tied at 3-3 after the first inning. The Bullpups moved ahead 4-3 in the second but WSS tied in the third. St. Anthony again regained the lead with one in the fourth. But WSS scored two in the fifth for a 6-5 lead. St. Anthony fought back to tie in the sixth. WSS then won it in the bottom of the seventh.

Addie Wernsing had two singles and an RBI to lead the winners. Gabby Vonderheide had a single and drove in two runs.

Wernsing and Stacie Vonderheide combined on the mound. Wernsing started and went one inning, allowing four runs on one hit, one strikeout and four walks. S. Vonderheide came on to pick up the victory, going six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, three walks and four strikeouts.

Madeline Kibler led St. Anthony with two singles and Haley Niebrugge added a double and two RBI. The Bullpups end the season with a 14-5 mark.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg heads to the Teutopolis Sectional Saturday with a 21-3 record and will face Casey-Westfield, a 10-0 winner over Martinsville in its own regional championship, at 11 a.m. Casey-Westfield sports a 20-3 mark.

Class 2A Cumberland Regional

Jasper County defeated Mattoon, 5-4 to claim the Cumberland championship Monday.

Mattoon held a 1-0 lead after two innings but Jasper County moved ahead 2-0 in the third. Mattoon then tied the score at 2-2 in the fourth and moved ahead 4-2 in the fifth. Jasper County came back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the victory.

Jasper County tallied seven hits led by A. O'Dell with a double and triple, M. Miller with a single, double and an RBI and K. Martin with two singles.

Frichtl picked up the pitching win in relief, going the last two innings, allowing no hits, no runs, one walk and striking out one.

Jasper County (24-1) now faces Macon Meridian (21-2) at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Cumberland Sectional at Toledo Volunteers Field.
