Millikin Softball Splits Pair Of Doubleheaders

For the second straight day, the Millikin softball team split a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) on April 7 at the Workman Family Softball Field in Decatur. Millikin downed Elmhurst College 7-3 in game one, but the Bluejays rallied to win in extra innings 3-2 in game two.

Millikin scored five runs in the first inning of game one thanks in part to two Bluejays’ errors and three walks. Skielyr Trenkle (Le Roy, H.S.) went 2-2 for Millikin with a double and two RBI. Taylor Jordan (Moweaqua, Central A&M H.S.) and Kalli Farmer (Columbia, H.S.) each had two hits and an RBI.

Freshman Aly Armstrong (Effingham, H.S.) improved to 5-0 on the season pitching all seven innings allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out eight.

In game two, Elmhurst’s Mia Tran had the game winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning breaking a 2-2 tie.

Cassidy Knoerzer (Lake St. Louis, Mo., Timberland H.S.) was 2-4 with an RBI for the Big Blue. Alyssa White (Mokena, Lincoln Way West H.S.) also had two hits.

Millikin split with Augustana College on April 6 at the Workman Family Softball Field. The Vikings won game one 2-1 and the Big Blue rallied to win game two 6-4 in eight innings.

Game two went into extra innings with Millikin’s Jordan Hildebrand (Mendon, Mendon Unity H.S.) breaking a 4-4 tie with a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning. The Vikings put two runners on in the bottom of the eighth, but Armstrong was able to shut down the rally for the Millikin victory. Armstrong earned the win throwing seven innings in relief allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out five.

Trailing 3-1, the Big Blue jumped out to a 4-3 lead with a three run fifth inning. Kelsey Farmer (Mattoon, H.S.) gave Millikin the lead with a two-run single.  Kelsey Farmer went 3-4 in the game for Millikin. Maggie Comerford (Decatur, Meridian H.S.) was 2-4.

In game one, Millikin scored in the bottom of the first on a run scoring double from Comerford.

Millikin is now 18-6, 4-4 and hosts fourth ranked Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday, April 12 at 5 p.m. The Titans are currently first in the CCIW.
