St. Anthony Picks Up Two, Softball Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony High School hosted North Clay/Clay City and Palestine/Hutsonville in softball competition Saturday and sent both teams home with big losses.

The Bulldogs downed N.C./Clay City, 21-2 in four innings. St. Anthony banged out 16 hits in the contest while NC/CC had five errors.

Leading the Bulldogs were Allie Day with two singles, a double, home run and four RBI, Sydney Gibson with four singles and three RBI, Jessica Coffin with a single, double and four RBI and Liz Day with a single and double. A. Day picked up the pitching win on a four-hitter with two walks and six strikeouts.

North Clay/Clay City was led by Allen with a solo home run and Allen with two singles.

In the other contest, St. Anthony handed Palestine/Hutsonville a 20-1 loss in four innings.

The Bulldogs stepped out to a 16-1 opening inning lead. St. Anthony had 22 hits. Big hitters were A. Day with two doubles, a home run and three RBI, L. Day with three singles and three RBI, Gibson with a single, two doubles and five RBI, Coffin with two singles, a double and an RBI, Grace Karolewicz with two doubles and an RBI, Katie Kabbes and Karlee Roepke with two singles and three RBI each and Shea Kinkelaar with two singles and two RBI.

Coffin picked up the pitching win on a three-hitter with four strikeouts.

At Vandalia

Vandalia edged Altamont with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday, 11-10.

The Indians held a 4-3 lead after three innings but Vandalia came back to take a 9-8 lead in the fourth. Altamont moved ahead 11-9 in the sixth but the Vandals won it in the bottom of the final frame.

Altamont outhit Vandalia, 15-13. Teasley led the way with two singles and a double while Goeckner had three singles, McManaway a single and double and Grimsley, Guse, Eckhardt and Ta. Mette with two singles each.

Altamont then competed in the Fairfield Tournament and suffered two losses.

The Indian fell to Harrisburg 10-0 in four innings in the opener. Payne threw a no-hitter against Atlamont.

In the second contest, the Indians dropped a loss to Carterville, 4-2.

Teasley had a double and White two singles for Altamont. The Indians fall to 0-3 on the season.
