Mattoon Downs Hearts Twice, Area Softball Roundup

MATTOON -- Effingham High School fell in an Apollo Conference softball doubleheader against Mattoon Saturday.

The Hearts dropped the opener 5-2. Mattoon took a 2-0 third inning lead then added on a single run in the fourth. The Hearts dented the plate twice in the sixth but the Green Wave came back in the bottom of that inning to score two more.

EHS had four hits led by Lauryn Douthit with a triple and an RBI.

In the second contest, the Green Wave blanked Effingham, 7-0. Mattoon scored three in the second and sixth and one in the fourth.

Effingham had six hits led by Carsyn Feaday with two singles, Emma Hardiek with a double and  Morgan Krouse with a double.

At Robinson

Altamont fell twice in softball action Saturday.

In the opener, Robinson was a 10-0 winner in five innings. Robinson edged out to 1-0 first inning lead and never looked back, ending the game in the fifth by the 10-run rule.

Tinley Mette had the lone hit, a single, for the Indians.

In the second game, Altamont fell to Carmi, 9-6. Carmi led 4-0 after the second and had a five-run fourth.

Ashley Goeckner had two singles, a double and an RBI while Shelbi Stone had two singles and an RBI.

Altamont drops to 8-21 on the season.

Newton came calling and had 16 hits and finished out with a 15-5 win over Teutopolis in action Friday.

The Eagles were led by T. Smith with three doubles, Geltz with two singles, a double and two RBI and Frohning and Grunloh with two singles each.  Grunloh had three RBI and Frohning two.

Teutopolis was led by Alli Brumleve with a two singles, a double and an RBI while Karsyn  Mette added a single, triple and two RBI and Caroline Beckman had two singles and an RBI. Marianna Hemmen had two singles.

Dieterich tallied a 4-2 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in eight innings Friday.

The Movin' Maroons held a 1-0 lead in the third and a 2-1 lead in the fourth. CHBC tallied the tying run in the bottom of the seventh.

Hunzinger had two singles for the winners while K. Bloemer had a double and two RBI.

CHBC was led by Liberty Dunaway with two doubles.

South Central took the early lead and went on for a 10-3 win over Webber Township (Bluford) Friday.

The Cougars had 13 hits in the contest led by Zoe Johnston with three doubles and an RBI and Kayli Swift with a double, home run and two RBI. Lexie Reid and Sydnee Garrett had two singles and two RBI each.

South Central improves to 12-5 on the season.

Neoga scored three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh for a 4-1 victory over Marshall Friday.

Jessica Atwell picked up the pitching win on a four-hitter with no walks and two strikeouts.

Elizabeth Titus had three singles while Makenzie Saunders and Je. Atwell had a single and double each. Atwell had two RBI while Saunders had one.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg edged Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hamond, 4-3. ALAH took a 2-1 firs tining lead but WSS came back to lead 3-2 after three innings. ALAH moved ahead in the sixth but WSS tied in the bottom of the seventh.

Calla Roney had three singles and an RBI while Mackenzi Tabbert had a single, double and two RBI.
