The Effingham Hearts clinched the 2018 Softball City Series, defeating the St. Anthony Bulldogs 10-0 in a game called due to the 10-run rule after the Bulldogs batted in the fifth. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

The Hearts won the Series after posting consecutive shutouts, having won the Wednesday evening game, 5-0.

Effingham scored three times in the first inning.

Emma Budde led off the game with a single, then Lauryn Douthit was hit by a pitch. Carsyn Fearday doubled home both runners, Jaidi Davis walked, and Aly Armstrong lofted a sacrifice fly to left that scored Fearday with the third run of the inning.

The Hearts added a run in the second, when Morgan Krouse led off the inning with a walk. With one out, Budde bunted Krouse, who had stolen second, to third, and Douthit doubled home Krouse to make it 4-0.

Effingham broke it open with a five-run third inning. Jaidi Davis singled to lead off the inning and pinch-runner Olivia Martin stole second base. With two outs, Emma Hardiek walked, Krouse was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Chloe Funneman was then hit by a pitch to force in Martin. Budde then singled home two runs to make it 7-0 and Douthit tripled home two more runs to give the Hearts a 9-0 lead.

Effingham got its 10th run in the fourth inning when Davis doubled to start the inning. A ground ball moved Davis to third and another ground ball by Skyler Schafer brought Davis home.

Davis had a good day at the plate, but her best performance was in the circle. She pitched a one-hit shutout, the one hit a clean single to center by Shea Kinkelaar in the second inning. Davis scattered three walks and fanned two batters.

Jessica Coffin started for the Bulldogs, but continues to battle injuries. Coffin pitched 2-2/3 innings, giving nine runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two batters and hitting two batters. Allie Day pitched the final 1-1/3 innings, allowing a run on a hit and a walk.
