St. A, WSS Move Into NTC Tourney Title Game, Softball Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg moved into the championship game of the National Trail Conference Softball Tournament with victories Wednesday.

The Bulldogs edged Neoga, 6-5. The two teams were tied at 2-2 after the first inning. Neoga moved ahead 4-2 in the third inning and led 5-3 after five. But the Bulldogs broke loose with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the win.

St. Anthony had five hits led by Katie Kabbes with a double and two RBI. Liz Day had a single and drove in two runs.

Allie Day picked up the pitching win, going all seven innings, allowing nine hits, one walk and striking out five.

Neoga was led by Elizabeth Titus with two singles, a double and an RBI while Molly Sheehan and Audrey Ramert had a double each. Makenzie Saunders had two singles and drove in three runs.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg handed South Central a 13-2 loss in five innings.

The Hatchets took a 4-0 first inning lead before South Central tallied two in the third. WSS then had a nine-run fifth to end the contest via the 10-run rule.

Megan Schlechte threw a six-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Mackenzi Tabbert had two singles, a double and drove in five runs for the winners. Calla Roney had a single, triple and two RBI and Hannah Hayes a single, double and an RBI. Carson Cole added a single and double.

South Central was led by Katlyn Hilmes and Kayli Swift with two singles each.

In consolation bracket action, Dieterich edged Altamont, 4-3. The Indians held a 1-0 lead until the third when Dieterich tallied two runs. The two teams were tied at 3-3 at the end of seven innings. Dieterich then scored the winning run in the eighth.

The Maroons had 14 hits in the contest led by Poe with three singles and two RBI, Locey with two singles and an RBI, Robards with a single and double and Niemerg with two singles. Bierman added a double.

Altamont was led by Tinley Mette with three singles and an RBI. The Indians drop to 6-17.

St. Elmo/Brownstown then downed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 8-2. SEB led 2-1 until the fifth then had a three-run fifth and a three-run sixth.

The winners were led by Oberlink with a single, triple and three RBI, Maxey with a single, two doubles and four RBIs, Moss with a single, double and an RBI and Parksion with a single and double.

The tournament ends Friday with the consolation championship featuring Dieterich against St. Elmo/Brownstown at 4:15 p.m. on the West Diamond, the third place game with South Central against Neoga on the East diamond and the championship featuring Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg against St. Anthony at 6:15 p.m. on the East Diamond.

At Effingham

Effingham High School swept an Apollo Conference doubleheader Wednesday.

The Hearts won the opener over Taylorville, 4-3. EHS held a 1-0 lead until the top of the seventh when the Tornadoes moved ahead 3-1. But the Hearts rallied with three runs in the bottom of the inning to pull out the victory.

Carsyn Fearday had three singles and drove in three runs while McKenzie Wittenberg had a single and double. Lauryn Douthit had a single and drove in a run.

Aly Armstrong was the winning pitcher on a four-hitter with one walk and five strikeouts.

In the second contest, the Hearts were 8-0 winners. EHS opened with a run in the first then had a five-run fifth and a two-run sixth.

Lauryn Douthit had two doubles and an RBI while Jaidi Davis had two singles and three RBI and Chloe Funneman two singles.

Davis was the winning pitcher on a five-hitter with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Casey-Westfield came calling and handed Teutopolis a 6-0 loss Wednesday.

The Warriors took a 1-0 first inning lead then had a four-run fifth and scored a single run in the seventh.

Casey-Westfield had 10 hits while its pitcher, Jones, threw a one-hitter with four walks and 11 strikeouts.

The lone hit for the Wooden Shoes was Sadie Bueker with a single. T-town drops to 10-6.

 At Hutsonville

Cumberland took the early lead and never relented in a 10-0 win over Hutsonville/Palestine in Little Okaw Valley-Southeast Division action Wednesday.

 Madison Hendrix picked up the pitching win on a one-hitter, striking out four.

She also aided the cause offensively with a single, home run and four RBI. Jazzmine Oakley had a single, double and two RBI while Sadie Oakley contributed three singles and an RBI.
