Effingham Wins Robinson Invitational, Softball Roundup

ROBINSON -- Effingham High School rebounded from an Apollo Conference doubleheader softball defeat Friday to claim the championship of the Robinson Invitational Saturday.

The Hearts fell to Charleston 5-3 in the opening game of the Apollo doubleheader. EHS took a 2-0 first inning lead then tacked on a single run in the second.

The Trojans scored one in the third then tied the score at 3-3 in the fourth. Charleston tallied two runs in the sixth to win.

EHS had six hits in the contest but committed three errors. Lauryn Douthit had a double while Carsyn Fearday had a triple and an RBI.

In the second contest, Charleston claimed a 5-1 victory. The Trojans led 2-1 until the fifth then tallied two runs and tacked on a final run in the seventh.

Effingham had four hits, all singles by McKenzie Wittenberg, Douthit, Skyler Schafer and Jaidi Davis.

The Hearts then competed in the Robinson Invitational Saturday and claimed the championship.

EHS opened with a 13-0 win over Hutsonville/Palestine. EHS ran off to a 10-0 opening inning lead.

The Hearts pounded out 16 hits in the game led by Fearday with two triples and three RBI, Wittenberg with three singles and two RBI, Chloe Funneman with a single, double and two RBI, Krysta Dasenbrock with two singles and Armstrong with a double.

In the second contest, the Hearts defeated Fairfield 9-6. Both teams had 11 hits in the game.

Davis led the Hearts with a single, two doubles and three RBI while Douthit had a single and double and Funneman two singles and an RBI.

Davis picked up the pitching win in 6.2 innings, allowing 11 hits, three walks and striking out 10.

In the championship, Effingham took a 3-0 second inning lead and went on to beat Robinson 6-0.

The Hearts had 10 hits led by Schafer with two singles and a double, Douthit with a single and double and Armstrong with two singles.

Armstrong was the winning pitcher, going all seven innings, allowing three hits, one walk and striking out nine.

At Robinson

Altamont High School participated in the Robinson Invitational Saturday.

The Indians fell to Mount Carmel 11-8. Altamont held a 5-3 lead until the fifth when Mount Carmel scored three then added on two more in the seventh.

Mount Carmel had 17 hits in the contest. Altamont had nine hits led by Abby Goeckner with a double, home run and four RBI, Shelbi Stone with two singles and two RBI, Katie Grimsley with two singles and Tinley Mette with a double and an RBI.

The Indians then fell to Lawrenceville 5-2. Lawrenceville took a 2-0 first inning lead and that was the game.

The Indians outhit Lawrenceville 5-4 but committed four errors. Stone had two singles and an RBI.

The Indians then claimed the seventh place contest over Hutsonville/Palestine, 13-7.

The Indians pulled ahead 7-4 after three innings then scored runs over the next two innings.

Grimsley had 14 hits in the contest led by Caitlyn White with a single, double and two RBI, Mary Guse with two singles and an RBI, Olivia Eckhardt with a single and double, Abby Goeckner with two singles, Tinley Mette with a triple and two RBI and Grimsley with two singles and an RBI.

Altamont is now 6-14 on the season.

At Salem

South Central trailed Salem 2-0 after the first inning but came back with a run in the third and tied in the fifth. The Cougars then had a six-run seventh inning to pull out an 8-2 win Friday. The Cougars sent 11 batters to the plate in that inning scoring the six runs on three doubles and four singles.

Lexie Reid and Sydnee Garrett, Kayli Swift had a single, double and two RBI each for the Cougars. Katlyn Hilmes and Jordan Geiler had two singles each. Hilmes added an RBI.

In the first inning, Garrett gave up two hits but  over the next six innings, she allowed only three hits.

South Central is now 8-4 on the season.

At Dieterich

 In a Friday contest, Dieterich downed Cisne, 12-5. The Movin' Maroons took off to a 6-0 first inning lead and that was the game.

Allie Poe had a single, triple and drove in three runs for Dieterich. Molly Niemerg and Kyla Johnson had a single and double each. Niemerg added an RBI.

In a Saturday contest, Dieterch fell to Arcola, 9-7. The Purple Riders took off to a 5-1 first inning lead. Dieterich pulled within 6-4 in the top of the fourth but Arcola scored three more in the bottom of the frame.

Dieterich outhit Arcola 15-10. Niemerg had a single an triple while Bierman had a single and double for Dieterich. Huzinger had three singles and two RBI, E. Bloemer two singles and two RBI.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg blanked St.Elmo/Brownstown, 10-0 in six innings Friday.

WSS took a 2-0 first inning lead then had two-run innings in the third and sixth and four in the fifth.

Calla Rony threw a five-hitter with no walks and 11 strikeouts.

Megan Schlechte had a single, double, triple and two RBI for the Hatchets. Roney added a double and two RBI and Mackenzie Reynolds two singles and an RBI.

SEB was led by Natalie Oberlink with a double.

Neoga held a 1-0 first inning lead then had a six-run fifth.

Partlow had two singles and an RBI for the winners while Titus had a double and drove in three runs. Saunders had 2 singles, a double and three RBI.
