Sophomore Allison Apke of Teutopolis homered for the third time in five games and drove in five runs to help power Bradley to a 9-2 victory over UMKC Saturday morning to open the second day of the Blues City Classic.

Apke, who has driven in 10 runs in the last five games and reached base safely in all 10 games she has appeared in this season, went 2-for-3 with a home run and five RBI to help highlight the game for the Braves.

Bradley (6-7 overall) scored in the first inning for the third consecutive game, plating a run in the bottom half of the frame on a Kealia Wysocki single to take a 1-0 lead.  Freshman Taise Thompson added another run in bottom of the third with a RBI double to left center to drive in Wysocki as the Braves led 2-0.

Junior Megan Mahaffy got out of a jam in the fourth after UMKC (3-10 overall) had a single and walk to open the inning.  Mahaffy got the first out of the inning on a fielder’s choice and ended the inning with a pair of groundouts.

Bradley broke the game open with a three-run fourth.  An error and Maria Schroeder single put a pair of runners on for Apke, who ripped her team-leading third home run of the season as the Braves built a 5-0 advantage.

UMKC got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs on an Olivia Fluehr single.  The Kangaroos threatened to cut further in the Bradley lead loading the bases again later in the inning, before Mahaffy got a groundout to end the inning.

The Braves got the two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, however, with Apke driving in two more runs with a two-out single to plate Schroeder and Elizabeth Leonard.

Thompson, who was making her second start of the season, added two more runs in the sixth with a two-run homer to push the BU advantage to 9-2.

Mahaffy retired UMKC in order in the seventh to close out the victory in the complete game effort.

Five Bradley players had multi hits, with Wysocki going 3-for-4 at the plate for her second straight outing with three hits.
