Effingham Junior High Softball Claims Third at State

The Effingham Mustangs came from behind against Stanford Olympia to claim third place in State AA Girls softball.
Trailing after the first innning 4-2 and 6-3 after the second, the Mustangs scored a run in the third and took a 7-6 lead with three runs in the fifth inning. Each team scored a run in the sixth but that was all the scoring as Effingham held on for the 8-7 win. The third place trophy is the best finish in softball for Effingham Jr. High.
McKenzie Wittenberg had three singles while Krysta Dasenbrock had a single, double and drove in a run for the Mustangs. Bella Kronewitter had two singles, Grace Bushur had a single and two RBI and Jaidi Davis a double.
Davis picked up the pitching win on a seven-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks.
The Mustangs were in the third place game after falling in semifinal play to Ottawa Shepherd 2-0 earlier in the day. Ottawa scored a run in the second inning and another in the fifth to earn the win.
The Mustangs' Davis had the lone hit of the game, a single. Ottawa's Abbi Bukantis threw the one-hitter with no walks and 13 strikeouts.
Effingham finished a great season with a record of 18 wins and 4 losses.
Ottawa lost in the championship game to Frankfort Hickory Creek 2-0.
