The Effingham Lady Hearts' first sectional softball appearance came to a close Tuesday night as Effingham fell to Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin, 9-2.

The contest was aired on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

The loss ended the Lady Hearts' season at 24-7. Griffin improved to 30-5 and will play in the sectional championship game Saturday at 1pm.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third. Katie McLean led off the frame with a walk and Bree Derhake singled. That brought up Renee Abernathy who launched a three-run homer over the left center field fence to give the Cyclones the lead.

The fourth inning, though, is where Griffin put the game away. Jessica Antonacci led off the inning with a double. With one out, Lakyn Wagoner doubled home Antonacci to make it 4-0. A base hit by McLean made it 5-0. Derhake bunted herself aboard and Abernathy singled. Ashton Dyche then singled home a run to make it 6-0 and Whitney David singled home two more runs to increase the lead to 8-0 and an error made it 9-0.

The Lady Hearts finally put some hits together in the seventh inning. With one out, Alissa Kersey doubled and Chloe Funneman bunted for a hit. Kersey scored on an error to make it 9-1 and Carsyn Fearday singled home Funneman to make it 9-2, but that's where the rally ended and the Cyclones claimed the victory.

Aly Armstrong took the loss, pitching the full six innings and allowing all nine runs, eight earned, on 12 hits, walking two and fanning two. David got the win for Griffin, also going the distance and allowing the two runs, one earned, on seven hits and a walk, striking out six.
