Bulldogs Win Softball Regional Championship

The St. Anthony Bulldogs won their own regional championship Saturday.  Members of the team are, front row, left to right, Danielle Having, Jenna Woltman, Hunter Niebrugge, Maddie Schuette, Abbie Schmidt, Laura Gurtner and Sydney Gibson. Effingham St. Anthony broke open a 0-0 game with three runs in the fifth inning then had to hold off Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg to pull out a 5-4 victory and the regional title Saturday.

Jenna Woltman picked up the pitching win on a four-hitter with five walks and nine strikeouts.

Hunter Niebrugge was the hitting ace with a double, home run and four RBI. Woltman added two singles.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Carson Cole with a double.

St. Anthony held the 5-0 lead before Windsor/Stew-Stras came back with four runs in the bottom of the seventh only to fall short.

St. Anthony now advances to the Altamont Sectional Tuesday to face Raymond Lincolnwood at 6:30 p.m.

Class 1A Casey-Westfield Regional

Casey-Westfield edged Oblong 2-1 to win the championship of its own regional Saturday.

The Warriors advance to the Altamont Sectional Tuesday and will face Bethany Okaw Valley, a 12-2 winner over Edinburg Saturday to win its own regional, at 4:30 p.m.

 

Class 1A Clay City Regional

The Wolves won their own regional champuionship Thursday. Clay City beat Woodolawn 11-3.

Clay City will now face Lebanon at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the New Athens Sectional.

 

Class 2A Tuscola Regional

Tuscola ended Cumberland's season Saturday with a 7-2 win.

Tuscola opened with a 1-0 first inning lead then had a four-run second. Cumberland tallied single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Six players had a hit each for the Pirates who finish the season with an 18-15 record.
