The Effingham Hearts swept Thursday's doubleheader with the St. Anthony Bulldogs, 14-1 and 4-1, to capture the 2016 City Series softball championship.

Both games were heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

EHS sophomore Aly Armstrong was the story of the day, pitching complete games in both ends of the doubleheader and striking out 20 batters, 15 in the first game. She allowed just seven hits on the day, and just one walk.

Effingham and St. Anthony were tied 1-1 in the sixth in the first game before the Hearts broke it open, scoring eight times in the sixth and five more times in the seventh to post the win.

St. Anthony took a 1-0 first inning lead. Jenna Woltman led off with a double, moved up to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Katie Kabbes.

Effingham tied the game in the third. Carsyn Fearday singled to lead off the inning, was sacrificed to second and then after Hope Collier singled and Jenna Wright walked to load the bases, came home with the tying run when Alyssa Kersey was hit by a pitch to force her home.

The Hearts' big sixth inning rally started with a leadoff walk to Aly Armstrong. Two wild pitches got Armstrong to third, where she was singled home by Skyler Schafer. Lauryn Douthit then walked. After Fearday reached on a fielder's choice, Kaylee Tonn singled home Schafer and Hope Collier then singled home Douthit. Jenna Wright then doubled home Tonn and an errant throw following a single by Madison Weis then brought home Collier. Kersey's single then plated Wright. After Armstrong singled, Schafer's sacrifice fly brought home Kersey with the eighth run of the inning.

Effingham scored five more times in the seventh. Fearday and Tonn led off the inning with back-to-back walks and Collier doubled home Fearday. Jenna Wright then cleared the bases with a three-run homer. After one out, Chloe Funneman walked and after a second out, Schafer doubled home Funneman to complete the scoring.

In Game 2, Wright got things started with a leadoff single in the second. Weis followed with a base hit and after an out, singles by Armstrong and Schafer plated Wright and Weis to make it 2-0.

Effingham added a run in the fifth when Tonn was hit by a pitch. Courtesy runner Shelbi Borries stole second and Wright doubled her home to make it 3-0.

The Hearts scored their final run in the sixth. Armstrong singled to lead off the inning and Schafer doubled. Lauryn Douthit then singled home Armstrong.

The Bulldogs scored their lone run in the seventh when Hunter Niebrugge tripled and then scored on an error.

Effingham improved to 20-4 on the season. St. Anthony is now 17-14. Game Three of the series will be played Friday at 4:30pm, and can be heard again on KJ Country 102.3.
