EHS Beats Salem in DH, T-town Downs Cumberland

SALEM -- Effingham High School swept Salem in an Apollo Conference softball doubleheader Thursday.

In the opening contest, the Hearts won 11-1. EHS took a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Salem scored a run in the fourth but the Hearts came back with three in the fifth and finished out with four in the seventh.

Armstrong was the winning pitcher, going four innings, allowing one run and one hit.

The Hearts had their hitting shoes on. Carsyn Fearday banged out a single and two doubles, Kaylee Tonn three singles and two RBI, Collier a three-run homer in the fifth, Madison Weis two singles and an RBI, Jenna Wright a single, double and two RBI, Alissa Kersey a double, Aly Armstrong two singles and an RBI and Skyler Schafer two singles and two RBI.

Armstrong picked up the pitching win on a one-hitter with one run, one walk and 10 strikeouts.

In the second game, Effingham again found the hitting range with 16 including five extra base hits. Tonn and Weis had a single and double each while Wright had two doubles and four RBI, Kersey four singles and two RBI, Armstrong two singles and an RBI, Schafer three singles and an RBI and Chloe Funneman a single, double and two RBI.

Collier went 3.2 innings with three strikeouts for the win.

The Hearts are now 6-2 in the Apollo Conference, 16-4 overall.

Teutopolis had a six-run first inning and never looked back in a 12-5 win over Cumberland Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes banged out 11 hits led by Anni and Kadi Borries with a home run each. A. Borries drove in two runs while K. Borries had three RBI. Allison Apke had three singles and three RBI. Danielle Repking added two singles.

Cumberland was led by Dunaway with a home run and two RBI and McMechan with a double.

The Wooden Shoes are now 24-1 on the season and will play host to Edwardsville in doubleheader varsity and doubleheader junior varsity games today beginning at 4 p.m.
