EHS Sweeps DH, St. A Downs Altamont, Area Softball Roundup

TAYLORVILLE -- Effingham High School swept a softball doubleheader over Taylorville Thursday. The Hearts blanked the Tornadoes 8-0 in the opener then came back for a 1-0 victory in the nightcap.

The two teams were scoreless through two innings in the opening contest before the Hearts tallied a run. EHS then had three-run innings in the fourth and sixth sandwiched around a run in the fifth.

EHS had 13 hits in the contest led by Jenna Wright with two singles, a double and a triple, Hope Collier with a single, double and triple and Carsyn Fearday with a single and double.

Aly Armstrong picked up the pitching win on a four-hitter with one walk and 14 strikeouts.

In the second game, the lone run came in the fourth. Collier had two singles for EHS. The Hearts improve to 12-4 on the season while Taylorville dropped to 10-10.

 At St. Anthony

Altamont came calling but Effingham St. Anthony was prepared and took a 5-3 National Trail Conference victory.

The Bulldogs stepped out to a 3-0 first inning lead. Altamont tallied two in the third and knotted the score at 3-3 in the fifth. But St. Anthony tallied two more runs in the sixth for the victory.

Hunter Niebrugge had her hitting shoes on with a double, home run and four RBI. Maddie Schuette had two singles while Abbie Schmidt added a douible.

Altamont was led by Winters with a triple. The Indians drop to 4-2 in the conference, 8-16 overall.

Jenna Woltman was the winning pitcher on a three-hitter with one walk and two strikeouts.

At St. Anthony

 At Highland

Teutopolis reached the 20-win season by beating Highland 9-6 Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes had a three-run second and a three-run third and went on for a the win over Highland.

The Shoes banged out 12 hits in the contest led by Kadi Borries with two singles and a triple and Apke with two singles, a double and an RBI.

K. Borries picked up the pitching win.

T-town will be back in action today at the Cross Creek Classic against Effingham St. Anthony at 7 p.m., a game that can be heard on KJ Country 102.3. A junior varsity game against Effingham will be held at 5 p.m.

At Strasburg

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg had the bats going strong, garnering 14 hits in the contest and a 9-1 National Trail Conference win over Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick.

WSS edged out to a 2-0 lead and built on that with two runs in the second and three in the fourth. Calla Roney picked up the pitching win, going two innings, allowing no hits, two walks and striking out three.

Mackenzi Tabbert had a double and triple for the Hatchets while Roney had a double, home run and three RBI. Carson Cole added a triple and an RBI.

BCCH was led by Timber Gates with a triple and an RBI. BCCH drops to 1-5 in the NTC, 1-10 overall.

At Strasburg

Newton edged Robinson 4-3. The Eagles tallied a run in the second and a run in the fifth. Robinson knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the sixth and the game went into extra innings.

Robinson pushed ahead with a run in the top of the 10th, but Newton came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to pull out the victory. Kristen Hardiek went 6 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out eight.

Frohning had a single, two triples and an RBI while Cohorst added a double.

Cumberland took the early lead and went on to bounce Villa Grove 12-0 in five innings.
