Olney Wins Newton Invitational; Other Friday Scores

Olney won the Newton Softball Invitational on Friday, based on head-to-head competition.

Each team played three games. Olney and St. Anthony each went 2-1, but Olney beat St. Anthony. Newton and Altamont each went 1-2.

For St. Anthony, in the loss to Olney, the Bulldogs got their two runs in the fourth and totaled seven hits in the contest. 

Allie Day went four innings and took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits and three walks, giving up two homers and fanning two. Maddie Schuette pitched 1-2/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks, striking out a batter and allowing a home run.

At the plate for St. Anthony: Marci Mills singled; Hunter Niebrugge singled and walked and scored; Maddie Schuette homered, scored and drove in two runs; Laura Gurtner tripled and singled; Liz Day doubled; Abbie Schmidt singled

In the win over Newton, the Bulldogs scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings and twice in the sixth, registering six hits. Newton scored single runs in the first and fifth and two runs in the fourth inning, totaling five hits.

Maddie Schuette pitched a complete game, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks in six innings, fanning one batter. Hardiek took the loss for Newton, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits and two walks in 4-2/3 innings, striking out six batters, while Shipman gave up a run in 1-1/3 innings, allowing two hits and two walks while fanning two batters.

At the plate for St. Anthony: Marci Mills singled; Jenna Woltman singled and walked, scored and drove in a run; Shea Kinkelaar walked twice; Katie Kabbes singled and drove in a run; Hunter Niebrugge scored a run; Maddie Schuette walked and scored and drove in a run; Laura Gurtner singled and scored and drove in a run; Liz Day singled; and Abbie Schmidt doubled and scored.

For Newton: Shipman walked and scored twice; Richards singled and drove in a run; Earnest singled and scored and drove in a run; Ochs doubled; J. Earnest walked and scored; Russell walked; Russell walked; Cohorst singled and drove in a run; and Stanley singled.

In the win over Altamont, Altamont took a 6-0 lead and added their seventh run in the fourth. In the meantime, though, St. Anthony scored two runs each in the second, third and fourth innings and three times in the fifth to post the win. Jenna Woltman got the win in relief, walking a batter in 1-2/3 innings. Katie Kabbes pitched the first two innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on three hits and four walks, striking out one. Maddie Schuette pitched 1-1/3 innings, allowing a run on four walks, while posting one strikeout. Shryock took the loss for Altamont. 

At the plate for St. Anthony: Mills singled and scored and drove in a run; Kabbes singled twice and scored twice; Niebrugge doubled and singled, scored twice and drove in a run; Schuette singled and scored and drove in a run; Gurtner singled twice and walked, scored twice and drove in two runs; Liz Day doubled and singled and drove in two runs; Stacy Gibson drove in a run; and Shea Kinkelaar scored a run

At the plate for Altamont: Burns walked twice, scored twice and drove in a run; Winters singled, walked twice, scored and drove in a run; Duckwitz doubled and walked, scored and drove in a run; Biggs walked; Mette drove in a run; Shryock singled and walked, scored and drove in a run; Phillips walked twice and scored; and Stone scored a run.

In the Altamont win over Newton, Audrey Winters pitched a no-hitter for the Lady Indians, fanning three.

EFFINGHAM 14, NOKOMIS 3

The Lady Hearts put this one away early, scoring five times in the first, four more in the second and single runs in the third and fourth before adding three runs in the sixth to close out the scoring.

Hope Collier, Alyssa Kersey and Aly Armstrong each homered for Effingham. 

Armstrong got the win to improve to 8-3 on the spring, allowing one hit and a walk in three innings while fanning six. Collier pitched the final 2-1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while posting one strikeout.

At the plate for Effingham: Carsyn Fearday doubled and singled and scored twice; Kaylee Tonn walked and drove in a run; Hope Collier homered and walked, scored twice and drove in three runs; Madison Weis doubled and singled, scored twice and drove in a run; Kinkelaar singled and scored; Alyssa Kersey homered and doubled twice and scored three times; Aly Armstrong homered and singled and walked, scored twice and drove in two runs; Carsyn Funneman singled three times and scored; and Lauren Douthit singled.

Effingham is now 9-4 on the spring.
