Effingham Flame 10U Black Open Season

Pitching for the Flame was Annie Frost.

The Effingham Flame 10U/Black girls softball team opened its season with a pair of wins Sunday afternoon against the Force from Cumberland.

In game one, the Flame scored eight runs in the first inning and things continued as six more crossed the plate in the second and three in the third for a 17-2 victory. The Flame compiled six hits while drawing 16 walks.

Courtney Beck picked up the pitching win, throwing the first two innings. Stacey Vonderheide came on to pitch the last two innings.

Izzy Volpi had three singles, Madison Mapes two singles, Annie Frost a single and Anna Faber a single.

In game two, the bats came alive for the Flame scoring 20 runs on 19 hits. The Flame scored five runs in all four of the innings.

"In game two we were able to see what the girls could do with the bats," said Coach Tonn. "We saw plenty of strikes and the girls took advantage of them."

Hits came from Gabbi Kreke with a single, Volpi with a single, Mapes with two singles, Frost with a double and triple, Courtney Beck with three singles, Ava Richards with a single and two doubles, Grace Nelson with a single and double, Aila Woomer with a single, Vonderheide with a single, Emma Jones with a single and Faber with two singles.

Grace Nelson pitched the first two innings for the win. Also pitching were Mapes. Gabbi Kreke and Frost.

"This was our first outing of the spring," said Tonn. "I thought we came out a little nervous but once we scored a few runs, it seemed to loosen them up a little. We were fortunate we were able to get six kids some throwing time in the mound and they all did a great job throwing strikes."

The Flame is back in action Tuesday against Jasper County at 6 p.m. at the Effingham High School softball field.

Members of the Flame are Emma Thompson, Kreke, Volpi, Mapes, Frost, Beck, Richards, Nelson, Woomer, Vonderheide, Jones and Faber.
