Effingham Junior High School saw its season come to an end in its own Class 2A softball regional Monday.

The Mustangs fell to top-seeded Mount Zion 13-3 in five innings. Mount Zion took an 8-0 lead after two innings. Effingham tallied three in the third but Mount Zion scored three more in the bottom of the frame and finished out with two in the fourth and one in the fifth.

The winners had 10 hits in the contest. Effingham had four hits led by Emma Budde with a triple.

In the second contest, Mattoon edged Teutopolis 9-8. Mattoon now advances to the championship game against Mount Zion at 4:30 p.m. today.

At Paris

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg fell in the championship game of the Class 1A Paris Crestwood Girls Softball Regional Monday to the host squad.

Windsor/Stew-Stras couldn't dent the plate in a 15-0 loss to Paris Crestwood.

Paris Crestwood advances to meet either St. Elmo/Brownstown or Mulberry Grove, who play today at Altamont for the regional title, Saturday at 11 a.m. at Paris.

 

At Altamont

St. Elmo/Brownstown, seeded third, upset second-seeded Altamont 11-8. Altamont led 1-0 but SEB tallied two in the second. Altamont tied at 2-2 in the third. The two teams were tied at 3-3 in the fourth. SEB took a 5-4 lead in the fifth. Altamont knotted the score once again in the bottom of the inning. But SEB broke loose with six runs and went on for an 11-8 win.

Cassidy Moss had three singles and an RBI for the winners. Natalie Obelrink, Vayda Smith and Josie Strauch had a single and double each. Oberlink and Strauch had two RBI while Smith had one.

Oberlink picked up the pitching win on a two-hitter with seven walks and 12 strikeouts.

In the opening contest, Mulberry Grove blasted Ramsey 15-0.

The championship game is scheduled today at 4:30 p.m. with SEB against top-seeded Mulberry Grove. The winner advances to the Paris Crestwood Sectional Saturday against host Paris Crestwood at 11 a.m.

At Newton

Jasper County saw its hopes for a regional title go by the wayside Monday in its own Class 1A Regional.

Charleston claimed a 7-3 victory to win the regional title. Charleston advances to face either Mount Zion or Mattoon, who play for the championship today at Effingham, Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Cumberland Sectional.
