Effingham Falls In Regional Play

MATTOON -- Effingham fell in the Class AA Mattoon Softball Sectional Saturday, seeing its season come to a close.

Mattoon captured the victory 19-7 in seven innings. Jenna Wright led Effingham offensively with two singles and a triple. Ashlyn Hanks, Madi Crain, Abbey Meinhart and Vanessa Ramos had a single each.

"We played well defensively when the ball was hit to us, but they were really good at hitting holes," said Coach Lindsay Francis. "I am so proud of the girls and the season we had."

Effingham finished the season with an 8-11 record and its first regional title since 2002. Mattoon advances to the Class AA State Tournament with a 23-2 record.

At Toledo

Casey-Westfield blanked Altamont to capture the Class A Cumberland Sectional Saturday, 11-0. Casey-Westfield took a 5-0 lead in the third inning and never looked back in seven innings.

Kate Jones pitched the win allowing three hits, two walks and striking out eight. Getting hits for Altamont were Audrey Winters with a single and Brooke Burns with two singles.

Altamont finished at 13-6 on the season.
