Pirates To Play For Softball Title Saturday

HUTSONVILLE -- Cumberland High School easily handled the host squad in the Class 1A Hutsonville/Palestine Softball Regional Wednesday, 13-3.

The Pirates opened with a 3-1 first inning lead and led 7-3 going into the the fifth then tallied two runs and finished the game with four in the sixth.

Kaylee Carlen pushed her pitching record to 16-6 by throwing a six-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts.

Kyla Thornton led offensively with two doubles, two home runs and three RBI. Jenna McMechan added two singles and two RBI while Katie Poe had two singles and an RBI. Carlen chipped in with a home run and two RBI.

The Pirates improve to 25-9 on the season and will face Casey-Westfield, also 25-9, at 11 a.m. Saturday for the regional title.

Postponed

In the Class 1A Stewardson-Strasburg Regional, the Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond vs. Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor contest was postponed until today at 4:30 p.m. because of the weather.

Also moved to today was the Woodlawn vs. Odin contest at the Class 1A Woodlawn Regional.

In Class 2A, Newton will face Paris today at 4:30 p.m. in the Robinson Regional. That contest was postponed.

The Fairfield vs. Lawrenceville game in the Class 2A Fairfield Regional was rescheduled for today at 4:30 p.m.
