EHS, Cumberland Take Softball Victories

MARSHALL -- Effingham took a 1-0 first inning lead and scored over the next four innings in downing Marshall 12-2 via the 10-run rule in softball action Wednesday.

The Hearts had an eight-run fourth. Aly Armstrong picked up the pitching win on a seven-hitter with four strikeouts.

Madison Weis led offensively with a single, double and an RBI while Shelby Borries chipped in with two singles and two RBI. The Hearts are now 12-7 on the season and will host Flora Friday at 4 p.m.

At Martinsville

Cumberland blanked Martinsville not once but twice in a Little OkawValley Conference Southeast Division doubleheader.

The Pirates won 14-0 in the opener. Taylor Layton had a single, triple and two RBI while Audrey Casey had two singles and two RBI. Katie Poe picked up the pitching win on a one-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts.

In the seconed contest, Cumberland claimed a 13-0 victory. Poe was the winning pitcher again, throwing a two-hitter with one walk and eight strikeouts. She now has an 8-2 record.

Poe added two singles and three RBI while Layton had a double, triple and three RBI while Casey and Lainey Jackson had two singles and an RBI each. Mariah Huddlestun added two singles.
