Bulldogs Outlast Indians, Hearts Drop DH To Taylorville

ALTAMONT -- Effingham St. Anthony pounded out 18 hits and outlasted Altamont 20-14 in National Trail Conference girls softball play Thursday.

The Bulldogs leaped out to a 12-1 opening inning lead and led 20-10 going into the final inning. Altamont made a comeback bid, scoring four runs, but couldn't overcome that first inning lead.

Jenna Woltman and Morgan Gardewine led the Bulldogs in hitting with four each. Woltman had three singles, a home run and six RBI while Gardewine had four singles and three RBI. Hunter Niebrugge chipped in with two singles, a home run and five RBI.

Goeckner led Altamont with two singles, a double and two RBI while Phillips added three singles and an RBI. The Indians drop to 3-2 in the National Trail Conference, 5-10 overall.

At Effingham

Effingham dropped an Apollo Conference doubleheader to visiting Taylorville, 9-3 and 10-5.

In the opener, Taylorville took a 2-0 lead in the third then had a six-run fourth inning. Effingham came back with three runs in the sixth but that's all the offense the Hearts could generate.

Madison Weis and Jenna Wright had two doubles each for the Hearts while Aly Armstrong had a triple and an RBI.

In the second game, the Tornadoes took a 10-5 win. Effingham took a 4-0 lead after one inning and held that lead until the sixth when Taylorville tallied five runs.

EHS had six hits in the game led by Weis with a single and two-run homer in the first inning. Aly Armstrong added a single, double and an RBI.

The Hearts drop to 2-6 in the conference, 7-6 overall.

At Kinmundy

South Central took a 2-0 first inning lead and held Dieterich scoreless for a 10-0 win in five innings.

The Cougars had a whopping 17 hits in the contest while Abby King held the Maroons to two hits, walking one and striking out eight.

King picked up the pitching win on a two-hitter with one walk and eight strikeouts. King also aided her own cause with a single, triple, home run and two RBI. Sidney Wilkins had a single, two triples and three RBI. Serina Lee added a double, triple and three RBI and Mia Campbell a single and double. Jordan Schaal chipped in with three singles. The Cougars are now 2-5 in the National Trail Conference, 6-9 overall.

Klay and Hunzinger had a single each for Dieterich.

Cumberland claimed an 11-1 win over Villa Grove/Heritage in Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division action Thursday.

The Pirates took a 5-1 first inning lead and had a six-run fourth to end the game via the 10-run rule. Kaylee Carlen pitched three innings, allowing four hits and striking out three to improve her pitching record to 13-2.

Taylor Layton had a triple and three RBI while Jenna McMechan had a single, double and two RBI. Audrey Casey chipped in with a double and three RBI.

Newton edged Robinson 9-7 to improve to 13-6 overall on the season.

The Eagles held a 6-2 lead after three innings. Robinson came back with a run in the fourth and four in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. Newton made its comeback bid in the last inning with three runs to pull out the victory.

Cohorst had a double, home run and five RBIs for the Eagles while Shipman added a single, double and three RBI.
