Newton Edges St. A, EHS Blasts Vandalia, Softball Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony played host to Newton and fell to the Eagles 8-7 in softball competition Tuesday.

The two teams were tied at 3-3 after one inning but Newton came back to break the tie in the top of the second with three runs. The Bulldogs fought back to knot the score again in the fourth. The two teams were tied at 7-7 in the sixth.

Newton then tallied the winning run in the top of the seventh.

Both teams had seven hits in the contest. St. Anthony finished with five errors.

Newton was led in hitting by Hardiek with a single, double and three RBI. Mammoser added a double.

St. Anthony was led by Nuxoll with a double and an RBI and Niebrugge with a single and two RBI.

At Vandalia

Effingham blasted Vandalia to the tune of 19-0 in five innings Tuesday.

The Hearts stepped out to a 5-0 first inning lead then had a nine-run second. Hope Collier and Aly Armstrong combined to pitch a no-hitter. Collier went three innings allowing one walk and striking out three. Armstrong pitched two innings, allowing no walks and striking out six.

Madison Weis had two doubles and two RBI for the Hearts while Collier had a single and double and Brittany Beals a single, double and three RBI. Kaylee Tonn and Jenna Wright had a double each. Wright drove in four runs. Morgan Wilson added two singles a double and four RBI. Alissa Kersey had two singles and four RBI.

The game was the season-opener for the Hearts. EHS also won the junior varsity contest 8-0.

At Centralia

St. Elmo/Brownstown broke loose with a 19-6 win over Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran in Egyptian-Illini Conference play Tuesday.

SEB jumped out early with a 6-2 first inning lead, then tacked on five runs in the second and third innings and ended the game in the fifth via the 10-run rule.

Darby Moss, Audriana Pruett and Tessa Philpot had three hits each for the winners. Philpot finished with six RBI while Moss and Pruett had two RBI each.

"Our plate approach was really good tonight by all the girls," said SEB Coach Tom Fredrigon. "Seniors Baylee Scholes and her battery mate Audriana Pruett really had a good game. They work well together anyway but they had a great rhythm tonight. Pruett called a great game and Baylee hit her spots."

Cumberland put together an eight-run third and went on for a 13-3 win over Altamont in five innings.

The Pirates had eight hits in the contest and was aided by five Altamont errors. Poe and Layton had a single and double each. Thornton and McMechan had a double each.

Altamont was led by Duckwitz with a single and double and Biggs with a single, double and two RBI. Stone added two RBI. Altamont drops to 0-3.

Teutopolis edged out to a 2-1 first inning lead but Mount Zion came roaring back with a four-run third. The Wooden Shoes rallied for four runs in the fifth and sixth innings and went on for an 11-9 victory.

Allison Apke hit a three-run homer for the Shoes and finished with five RBI. Kadi Borries had a single, double and three RBI while Repking added three singles and two RBI.

T-town is now 6-0 on the season. Mount Zion won the junior varsity contest 7-3.

Odin stepped out to a 4-0 first inning lead and scored in every inning. The Eagles had seven hits in the contest led by Laffoon Kennedy with a double and Kelly Spears with two singles and an RBI.

BCCH was led by Timber Gates with two singles.
