Effingham Heat Take Second at USSSA State Softball Tourney

The Effingham Heat 16U girls fastpitch softball team was in action last weekend in the USSSA State Tournament. The Heat came away with a second place finish.

In the opening game, the Heat defeated the Mattoon Cobra 9-4, Cheyanne Moan was the winning pitcher. The Heat was led by Hope Collier with a double.

In the second contest, the Heat took on Mount Zion and was held scoreless until the fourth when they put three runs on the board then added seven more in the fifth and another in the sixth, winning 11-1. Collier got the win on the mound and hit a home run while Madison Weis had two doubles, Olivia Hickey a triple and Hannah Dulaney a double.

In game three, the Heat took on the MO. CO. Rush, winning 6-3. Alexis Sullivan led the winners with a single and triple while Collier had a triple and Becca Schlechte chipped in with two singles. Cheyanne Moan picked up the pitching victory.

In game four the Northern Il. Thunder was the opponent. The Heat gave up a run in the top of the first, but scored four in the bottom half of the inning adding two in the second, three in the third and two more in the fourth for the 10 run rule. Collier got the win for the Heat.

Weis had a single and home run for the winners. Kaylee Tonn had two singles while Jenna Wright had a single and double.

With the win in game four, the Heat matched up against the undefeated Mattoon Pride. The Heat fell behind early giving up a run in the first and another in the third. The Heat then scored their first run in the third, the second in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth. But Mattoon came back with four in the sixth for the 6-3 loss.

Hickey had a single and double while Collier and Schlechte had two singles each.

In game six, the Heat won on forfeit over the Northern Il. Thunder Purple.

With the win, the Heat then played the Pride once again losing 8-0. Collier picking up the loss. The Heat was only able to manage one hit, a single by  Schlechte and was held scoreless in the contest.

"Overall a good weekend, anytime you are one of two teams left on the last day you can say it was a good weekend," said Heat Coach Jeff Tonn. "The girls were focused at the plate and it showed with the way we were able to score runs. The girls played very well in the field as well, Hope and Cheyanne did a good job throwing strikes and keeping hitters off balance. This is a great group of girls."

The Heat are in action again this next weekend in Charleston for the NSA National Qualifier.
