Altamont Advances To State Softball Tournament

SPRINGFIELD -- Camp Point Central had high hopes heading into the Class 1A Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Softball Super-Sectional Monday. But standing in their way was an Altamont team that had other ideas.

The Indians decided early on they were going to go to the State Tournament and nothing stood in their way Monday. Deidre Ledbetter pitched a one-hitter, allowing no walks and striking out nine. Meanwhile the Altamont bats were on fire as they banged out 13 hits and brought home 16 runs in ending the game 16-0 in five innings.

All of the Altamont players reached base during the contest. The Indians' Madison Ohnesorge got on in the first inning on a single but was left stranded at third base. But that was the last time the Indians were going to strand a runner.

In the second, Lauren White drew a walk and Alex Teasley reached on an error. With one out, Brook Burns singled and two runs scored. Audrey Winters followed with a single. With two outs, Josie Phililps singled home two more runs and Ledbetter followed with a double, scoring a run. When the dust cleared, the Indians held a 5-0 lead, plenty of runs for Ledbetter to work with.

But, they didn't stop there. In the third, the Indians batted around again. White singled followed by a fielder's choice by Teasley. Nikki Tharp singled home a run and Burns followed with a single. Winters drew a walk and M. Ohnesorge singled home two runs. Phillips banged out a home run and the Indians led 12-0.

The final four runs came in the fourth. Ledbetter had a triple and drove in two runs. White singled home a run. Tharp and Burns had a double each.

Phillips was a hitting star with a single, home run and four RBI. She has driven in 10 RBI in the last two games. Ledbetter had a double, triple and three RBI while Burns had two singles, a double and four RBI and M. Ohnesorge two singles and two RBI. The Indians have outscored their opponents 57-3 in the post-season.

The lone single for Central came from Amanda Ihrig's bat in the fourth inning.

Altamont now advances to the Class 1A State Tournament at EastSide Centre in East Peoria Friday. The Indians will take on Sciota West Prairie at 10 a.m. Friday. Amboy faces the winner of the DuQuoin Super-Sectional at 12:30 p.m. The winners advance to the championship game Saturday at 12:30 p.m. while the losers square off for third place at 10 a.m.

Class 2A Johnston City Super-Sectional

Teutopolis was set to take on Carterville in the Class 2A Johnston City Super-Sectional but the game was rained out. A helicopter was brought in, in an attempt to dry the field but to no avail.

The Shoes will return to action today at 4 p.m. The winner advances to the Class 2A State Tournament Friday at East Peoria.

Class 2A Champaign Super-Sectional

Monticello edged Dupo 2-1 in action at Champaign. Dupo took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. It was the top of the seventh before Monticello brought home its two runs.

Effingham resident, Anna Mae Gibson, has a granddaughter, Hannah Smith, a sophomore, who plays for Monticello. Monticello will now face Rock Island Alleman at 3 p.m. Friday at the Class 2A State Tournament in East Peoria.
