Bulldogs Season Comes To End in Softball, Area Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony Higih School saw its softball season come to an abrupt end in opening round play of the Class 1A Shelbyville Regional Monday.

The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the first and tacked on a run to lead 3-1 in the second. But Pana slowly came back with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to pull out a 4-3 victory.

Both teams had six hits in the contest but the Bulldogs committed three errors. St. Anthony was led by Hunter Niebrugge with a home run and two RBI.

At Farina

South Central won its opening game in the Class 1A Wayne City Regional by trouncing Webber Township (Bluford) 12-3.

The Cougars banged out 14 hits in the game led by Alannah Sigrist with two singles, Sidney Wilkins with two singles and an RBI, Bailey Ritter with two singles and two RBI, Abby King with a single, tirple and an RBI and Jordan Schaal with a single and three RBI.

The Cougars are now 2-18 on the season and back in action today against Wayne City at 4:30 p.m.

At Newton

Newton played host to Mount Carmel and handed the Golden Aces a 12-1 loss in opening round play of the Class 2A Lawrenceville Reigonal.

The two squads were tied at 1-1 in the top of the third before the Eagles tallied three runs in the bottom of the inning and never looked back.

Fore had a single, double and an RBI while Kerner had a single, home run and four RBI and McCoy, single, home run and three RBI. Sandschafer chipped in with two singles, a double and an RBI.

Newton will now face Fairfield today at 4:30 p.m. followed by Flora taking on Lawrenceville.

Central A&M trounced St. Elmo/Brownstown 24-4 in five innings Monday.

Central A&M took a 9-0 first inning lead then had an eight-run second and ended the game via the 10-run rule.

Fitch had two singles for SEB, which drops to 15-15 on the season.

Altamont blanked Dietericih 9-0. The Indians held a 2-0 first inning lead and scored over the next two innings then tacked on two more in the fifth.

Altamont had 12 hits in the contest while Deidre Ledbetter pitched a two-hitter with no walks and 16 strikeouts.

Ledbetter also aided her own cause with four hits and six RBI. Phillips had three hits and an RBI.
