Altamont Wins Newton Softball Tournament

NEWTON -- Altamont High School finished 3-0 at the Newton Girls Softball Tournament Friday to capture the championship.

The Indians were followed by Effingham St. Anthony 2-1, Olney 1-2 and Newton 3-0.

Altamont trounced Olney 18-0 then edged Newton 6-5 and blanked St. Anthony 10-0. St. Anthony beat Newton 4-3 and Olney 7-5. Olney downed Newton 10-3.

Altamont scored two runs in the top of the seventh to pull out the win over Newton 6-5. The Indians had 11 hits in the contest led by Deidre Ledbetter with two singles, a double and three RBI and Lauren Ohnesorge with two singles, a double and two RBI.

In the victory against St. Anthony, Altamont tallied five runs in the first and third innings to end the game in the fifth via the 10-run rule.

L. Ohnesorge had a single, home run and drove in six runs for the winners. Ledbeter had a single, double and two RBI. White added a double. Ledbetter pitched a one-hitter with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Makayla Walsh had the lone hit for the Bulldogs, a single.

St. Anthony edged Newton 4-3, scoring the winning run in the sixth. Walsh had a single, triple and an RBI while Paige Koester and Kristen Schuette had two singles each.

The Bulldogs defeated Olney 7-5 behind a 10-hit attack. Hunter Niebrugge had a single, home run and two RBI for the Bulldogs while Kate Richards, M. Schuette and Megan Nuxoll had two singles each. Schuette and Nuxoll had an RBI each.

Olney defeated Newton 10-3 in four innings. Ginder had three singles and three RBI for the winners while K. Royse had two singles and two RBI. Newton was led by Fore with two singles and an RBI.
