EHS Soccer Season Comes To End In Regional

Effingham High School played host to the Class 2A Soccer Regional and fell victim to Mattoon, 2-0 Wednesday evening.

The Green Wave took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal with 21:01 remaining by Chase Harvey. Harvey nailed his shot in the upper left corner of the goal. Daniel Ferguson then scored with 27:33 left in the second half with an assist by Andy Dole. It was the first time in four outings this season Mattoon scored on the Hearts.

The Hearts had possession most of the second half but Mattoon kept Tyler Katz, Michael Carie and Phil Kniight under control. Effingham had only three shots on goal while the Green Wave had seven shots on goal.

Effingham's Dalton Steele had two saves and Frank Kasdorf three saves. The Hearts end the season with a 10-8-3 record.

Now Mattoon moves on to face Coles County rival Charleston at 3 p.m. Saturday at Effingham High School. The champion will then advance to the Troy Triad Sectional scheduled for Tuesday at 4 p.m.
