Tyler Adams will captain the U.S. men’s national team into the 2022 FIFA World Cup, head coach Gregg Berhalter announced on the eve of Monday’s Group B opener vs. Wales.

When he does, he’ll be the youngest captain at this World Cup, and the first Black man to captain the U.S. throughout any World Cup.

The controversy-laced World Cup tournament opened Sunday with the 2019 Asian Cup champions, Qatar, getting outplayed in a 2-0 loss to Ecuador. Qatar makes history as first host nation to lose opening World Cup game.
