Effingham St. Anthony High School opened the soccer season by blanking Vandalia, 5-0 Tuesday.

"We had a great game," said St. Anthony Coach Martin Reyes. "We have many new players in new positions, but defense did very well."

Wade Lawrence, a senior, opened the scoring by connecting twice in the first half. Kevin Gonzales, a junior, scored the third goal to close the first half.

Lawrence opened the second half with his third goal and Trey Brummer, a senior, scored the fifth goal.

"Our defense played very well," said Reyes. "Andrew Dust, Adam Brandenburger, Joshua Blanchette and Eric Deters did great on defense."
