The Hearts celebrate a 7-1 win over Olney Thursday.

CHARLESTON -- Effingham and Mattoon will square off for the championship of the Charleston Red & Gold Soccer Tournament after both teams came out of the opening two days with two wins each.

The Hearts took on Olney Thursday and pounded the Tigers, 7-1.

"In the first 10 minutes of play, we managed to score two quick goals," said EHS Coach Weston Peno. "From there, we finished the first half with five goals to one. Our team passed really well and maintained momentum for a good portion of the first half.

"The second half, we went out a bit sluggish but managed to regain control. We then scored two more goals. Our defense applied pressure downfield to keep the scoring opportunities at a minimum. My goalie secured the ball and made phenomenal plays."

Scoring three goals was Oswaldo Angel while Parker Siner tallied two goals. Victor Hugo Carillo and Tucker Moeller each scored a goal. Brandon Duncan had seven saves.

"I am very happy witht the team play and skill we showed tonight," said Peno.

In the other contest, Mattoon defeated Charleston, 4-1.

Saturday's matches feature EHS against Mattoon at 10 a.m. and Olney facing Charleston at noon. Awards will be held at 1:30 p.m. Olney and Charleston both have 0-2 records.

Celebrating a goal were, left to right, Deryl Pleasant, Osvaldo Angel and Parker Siner.
